IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-PANS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 113,343, dated August 22, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER M. CONGER, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust-Pans; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication, in which drawm g- Figure l is a plan view of a dust-pan containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the line .1.' .r of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a modification.

This invention consists in combining with a dust-pan a removable spring-clamp or holderfor a brush, said spring-clamp or holder being screwed directly upon the wall of the pan in such a manner that the brush can be placed in the clamp and there be held by pressure, and be removed therefrom by forcing open or overcoming the tension of the spring-clamp.

In the accompanying drawing, A designates a dust-pan, which can be of any desired shape, B is the spring-clamp for holding the brush C by pressure. This clamp is attached to the wall of the body of the dust-pan in the position shown by means of set-screws or other fastening devices, so as to be removable when not required. In the Figs. l and 2 a simple clamp is shown, consisting of a piece of metal bent into a circular form and extending along the wall of the pan, to which it is secured by set-screws at one edge, while the other edge is left free to form the spring. The mouth of the clamp is, in this instance, presented toWard the pan, but it may be turned toward the handle if desired.

In forming the clamp or holder I have regard to the size and character of the brush to be used with the dust-pan, making it of suitable capacity to hold the body I) of the brush.

The m outh ofthe sprin g-cl am p is made less than the inside diameter of the clamp, so that the free end will embrace the body of the brush when the latter has been forced into .the clamp. Fig. 3 shows a modification in the form of the clamp, consisting of two narrow strips of metal applied to the rear walls of the pan, one on each side of the handle. Said pieces are attached by screws or other fastenings, and act as thepressure-clam p above described.

I design, in some instances, to furnish the clamp or holder separately to the market, so that the same can readily be attached to pans now in use, and removed when the latter become worn out or injured, and when detached occupy a small space for packing.

In order to force the body of the brush int-o the clamp I bring it up under the free ends or end of the clamp, and then by bearing upward and turning the body of the brush downward and toward the inside of the clamp it is easily crowded through the mouth of the clamp, whose ends or end then embrace it and holds the brush securely against accidental displacement, no matter in what position the` pan may be placedl Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The removable spring-clamp or holder B, constructed as described, for holding the brush by pressure, in combination with the dust-pan A, when the spring-clamp or holder is secured upon the rear wall of the pan, in the manner and for the pinpose herein shown and set forth.
