SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,781, dated J' anuary 23, 1900.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST J. KLINGEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Hand- Stamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in holders for hand-stamps; and its-object is to provide a device simple and durable in construction, which may be readilyr attached to or detached from a rack,'and to provide suitable means for holding an index or other card.

To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of myinvention, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing a rack provided with my holders and stamps suspended in said holders. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of said holder detached. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the body of the holder is formed, showing in dotted lines the lines upon which it is bent or shaped. Fig. 6 is a similar View of the spring-blank. Fig. '7 is a View of a form of eye or pin to be attached to the stamp-block and inserted in the holder.

Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is the back or body of the holder, of suitable material, and bent upon itself at one end to form a hook B. The lower portion of the body A is bent forward to form a shelf C, and a slit C is cut longitudinally therein, the edges thereof being turned downward to form iianges c. The sides of said shelf are also turned downward to form flanges c', said flanges c and c forming guides upon the under surface of shelf C for the purpose hereinafter described.

scribed, while the upper portions d form slots for the reception of a suitable card or ticket, as shown in Fig. 1.

As before stated, the lower portions d of th'e sides of the body A clamp upon the end of a spring E. Said spring is preferably of the width of the body A, and is formed from a blank of sprin g metal, as shown in Fig. 6. The upper end F of the spring E is retained in position between and by the lower side portions d of the body, all upward movement being prevented by the lower ends of the upper side portions d. The spring then extends downward at an angle to the body and over the end of and under the shelf C, the backwardlyturned portion Cr thereof having a substantially T-shaped slot g, adapted to receive the flanges c, which, together with the flanges o', serve as guides for the said portion G. That part H of spring E which is intermediate the portions F and G is also provided with a slot h, which slot, however, is preferably substantially Y-shaped, the lower end thereof communicating with slot g and registering with the slot C in shelf C.

In Fig. 7 I have shown a form of eye-screw which I preferably attach to one end of the block of a hand-stamp. Said screwIis preferably iiattened intermediate its head and its .threaded portion, as at i, the thickness of said flattened portion being such as to admit of its being slid within slots C hl of the holder.

In using this improved holder it is suspended by means of the hook B upon a rack of suitable construction, preferably such as shown in Fig. 1. The eye 0r end of the screw, which is secured to the end of the stampblock, is then placed in the Y-shaped slot h of spring-plate E, the inclined edges thereof guiding the iiattened or stem portion of the said screw into the slot C in the shelf C. The stamp will then hang suspended from the holder, the incline of the shelf tending to retain the screw I near the inner end of the said slot C'. A card bearing proper subject-matter may then be slipped between the side portions d, the lower edge thereof resting upon the uppermost portion of spring E. Whenit is desired to removethe hand-stamp from the holder, the same is drawn outward until the head or eye strikes to either side of the lower portion of the Y-shaped slot h. The spring IOO E will then be forced outward, permitting the said head or eye to drop over the edge of the shelf C and through the broad end of the T-shaped slot g. The spring will then immediately drop back to its normal position.

It will be seen that by this construction the stamp may be suspended or detached at one movement, and by inclining the shelf C, as shown, the face of the stamp is held by gravity against the wall of the rack, thereby tending to protect said face from dust and dirt.

It is obvious that by placing a proper card in each holder upon the rack the desired stamp can be readily located. lVhile I have mentioned the use of flattened eye-screws for securing the stamps to the holders, it is obvious that other suitable objects, as nails, could also be used.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention, but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A device of the character described, comprising the body portion, a slotted shelf, and a spring normally engaging with said shelf, for the purpose described.

2. Adevice of the character described, comprising the body portion, a slotted shelf, and a spring normally engaging with the edge of said shelf for the purpose described.

3. A device ofthe character described, comprising the body portion, means at one end whereby the same may be suspended, a slotted, inclined shelf at the opposite end, and a spring overlapping and normally engaging with said shelf, substantially as described.

4. A device of the character described, comprising the body portion, a hook at one end thereof, an inclined, slotted shelf at the opposite end, and a slotted plate secured to said body portion and overlapping said shelf, substantially as described.

5. A device of the character described, comprising the body portion, means for attaching said body portion to a rack, the., a slotted shelf at the lower end thereof, there being grooves on said body portion, for the purpose described.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion, a slotted shelf at one end thereof, a spring-plate secured to said body portion and overlapping, and normally bearing upon the edge of, said shelf, said spring having a slot registering with the slot in said shelf, substantially as described.

7. The combination, with a body portion, hook, and slotted shelf, of a spring-plate secured to said body portion and overlapping, and normally engaging with the edge of, said shelf, said spring provided with a slot registering with the slot of the shelf, and also having a receiving-slot, all substantially as described.

S. Adevice of the characterdescribed, comprising a body portion, hook, shelf and cardholder all formed from one blank, and a retaining spring-plate secured to said body portion and normally engaging with the edge of the shelf, said plate having a substantially Y-shaped receiving-slot and a T-shaped releasing-slot, all arranged substantially as described.

9. A device of the characterdescribed, comprising a body portion, the hook, and the slotted shelf adapted to receive a suitable object, as an eye-screw, attached to one end of a hand-stamp, and means for retaining said 0bject in said slot, comprising a spring-plate, secured to said body portion and slotted as described, said plate overlapping, and normally engaging with the edge of, said shelf, substantially as described.

l0. The combination with a holder having a slotted shelf, of a stamp having an eyescrew secured to one end thereof and adapted to be suspended iu said slot, said screw comprising the eye or head, the iiattened stem and the threaded portion, substantially as described.
