1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dust pans.
An object of the present invention is to provide a dust pan having a pocket formed therein in which the dust is disposed and from which it may not inadvertently be dropped. A further object is to provide supporting means at the rear of the pocket for securing a whisk broom.
Broadly the device consists in a dust pan formed with an inclination at the front extremity, a straight portion extending rearwardly of the inclination and a pocket at the rear of the straight portion. The pocket is formed transversely of the dust pan and has perpendicular lateral sides mounted thereon. One of the sides is pivotally held in position and forms a means of removing the dust therefrom. A handle is integrally formed with the said pocket.
Although Figures 1 and 2, disclose a dust pan with a short handle, it is understood that a long flexible or rigid handle may be attached thereto without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
With these and other objects in view that may appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel arrangement of cooperating parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which:
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a View similar to Fig. 1, having the pivoted side wall in a raised position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view partly in section showing the whisk-broom securing means;
Fig. 4 shows a detail of the pivoted side wall in a closed position, and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, in the opened position.
Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, it will be seen the invention consists of a dust pan formed of a single piece of material having a straight portion I0, an inclined portion or scoop II disposed ahead of the straight portion and a pocket I2 at the rear of the said straight portion. The lateral sides I3 are formed at right angle and extend to the rear where at this point, they narrow sufficiently to form a handle I4.
The device is used much the same as conventional dust pans. One of the side portions I5 of the pocket I2 is hinged at its rear extremity I6 by means of a rivet or the like and is swung upwardly to empty the dust from the pocket I2.
A tongue and groove assembly ll secures the front extremity of the pivoted side I5, the tongue I8 being formed on the side while the groove I9 is formed on the portion ahead of the pivoted side.
At the rear of the pocket portion I2 a pair of clips 29 are mounted for securing a whiskbroom thereto.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the invention may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A dust pan comprising a bottom wall having a straight portion with an upwardly turned portion at its forward end and a downwardly curved concave portion at its rear end, side walls extending the length of said bottom wall, one of side side walls being cut-away along the curved portion to provide an opening and a closure plate pivotally mounted at one end on the side wall adjacent the rear wall of the curved portion for vertical swinging movement to cover and uncover said opening, the free end of said closure plate having a. tongue formed thereon for engagement in a groove in the end of the adjoining side wall when the closure is moved to a closed position.
