IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHININEV CLEANERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,452, dated July 25, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD PEARsoN, of the city and county of Allegheny, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Cleaner for Lamp-Chimneys; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference. marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in making a new article of manufacture, viz., a cleaner for lamp-chimneys, constructed of strips of steel held together where they cross each other by means of a thin metallic center piece, the ends of said strips being secured in a handle and the strips expanded by the forward pressure of the handle.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specilication, Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement in cleaner for lamp-chimneys. Fig. 2 represents the inner sides of the strips and the manner of folding down the points ofthe center piece used for securing the strips together. Fig. 8 represents the outer surface of the strips, and the center piece used for securing the strips together.

In the accompanying drawing similar letters have reference to similar parts.

A represents a wooden handle, which may be of any desired form. B and C are strips of spring steel, and secured together by means of a thin metal center piece, D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The ends of the strips B and C are secured in the handle A in any suitable manner. In cleaning a lamp-chimneya cloth is placed over the strips B and C; they are then pressed together so that they will enter the openings of the lampchimney. The cleaner being placed in the chim ney as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l, the handle A is pressed forward and rotatedbackward and forward, which will, through the medium of the cloth around the strips and by their flexibility, and rotating of the handle and strips, clean the chimney with great facility and ease.

Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- A new article of manufacture, viz., a cleaner for lamp-chimneys, constructed of strips B and C held together at the point where they cross each other by means of a thin metallic center-piece, D, and their ends secured in the handle A, said cleaner being expanded by the forward pressure of the handle, as hereinV described and for the purpose set forth.
