ALPIHEUS 1). SMITH,
OF GRAFTON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 108,527, .dated October 18,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
I, ALPHEUS D. SMITH, of Grafton, in the county, of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Lamp-chimney Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cleaner.
The nature and object of my invention consists in so arranging the various parts in relation to each other and to the chimney when being cleaned, that any desired pressure may be applied on the surfaces of the glass to be cleaned without liability of breaking, by causing one buff to act on the inside, and the other on the opposite or outside of the chimney, thus grasping a single thickness between thebnffs of the cleaner with as much pressure as desired, while a brisk motion of the buti's or chimney, lengthwise or around each other, cleans the chimney quick and thoroughly.
My lamp-chimney cleaner has two buff-rods, B and O, and the handle A, which is about two inches square and one inch thick, with grooves D and E, which are about three-eighths of an inch deep, and wide cut centrally in the edges and lengthwise of the handle, in which the ends of the buff-rods B and C are secured by pins F and G, by which rod B is rigidly held, while rod 0 is so pinned in the handle A as to admit of opening or closing out and into'groove E, but is otherwise rigidly held in said groove.
The bud-rods B and C may be made ten inches long and three-eighthsot' an inch (ormore) square, and so shaped and arranged in the handle A that the buff ends H and 1 each project half an inch or more toward each other, for the purpose of grasping the chimney on the inside and outside between them, when the application of the usual amount of pressure (and in this way much more is easily and safely applied) will clean two sides of the chimney quicker and easier than one is ordinarily done, and, at the same time, give. the necessary room, so that the bulge of the chimney will not interfere with the desired action of the bud ends H I on the surface of the glass.
Any suitable buff material may be used on the bud ends of the rods B 0, either permanently or detached. I take about three-fonrths'oi' a yard of any suitable material, of which I use as many thicknesses as desired over and on the buff ends H I of the rods B O, and, when soiled, is easily replaced or cleaned.
\Vhat- I claim as myimprovement in lamp-chimuey cleaners is-.-
The arrangement and construction of the huff-rods B O, by which the inside and outside of the chimney may be cleaned by one operation, in the manner shown and described.
