TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. DOBBINS, of Lowell,l in the county of Middlesex, andState of Massachusetts, have invented new andv useful Improvements `in a Device for Cleaning Boiler-Flues; and I do hereby declare that the following Vis afull and exact descriptio drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
The nature of my invention consists in' a device for cleaning boiler-hues, which is provided witha. spreader whereby the steam, in passing' through the device into the ilue, is forced against the entire inner surface, whereby to remove all obstacles, thus cleaning the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i v i Figure 1 represents a plan of..my improved device for cleaning boiler-llues.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same.
n thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingv Figure 3 represents an end elevation of the Hue-end, with parte removed, showing the constructionof the same.
Similar letters in `the dilerent figures indicate corresponding parts.
I construct my .improved device in two parts, a representing the lend to be connected and secured teva' suitable pipe, which may be made of rubber, le ather,.or metal, as the user may desire, b the flange, and c the spreader, this spreader c being in a cone-shape form, its apex secured by a screw, or its equivalent, to the rib d, the`rib d connecting with the flue-end e of the' device. The base of the spreader c, when in position, being minus ush with the flue-end e, its diameter being less than the diameterrof the flue-end e, thus leaving a space between the same. i
Operation. i
The. device, being thus constructed, and its several' parts arranged as described, is then connected und secured 'to a suitable pipe leadingfrom the boiler, or any of its appendages connected-thereto. The flue-end e is then placed into the flue to be cleaned up tothe flange b,this end e being made enough smaller than the iue, to overcome the expansion ofthe same caused by thesteam' when passing through the same.
The steam is then let into the pipe', which, by its pressure, passes through the same, coming in contact with the spreader c, which, being made angular, offers no resistance, nor impeding the progress of the steam, conveying it to the opening; as seen in figs. 2 and 3, at P P, where it enters the Hue, the whole pressure and force of thesteam 'coming in contact with the inner surface of the-3some, which, by its great `force centredto and on the inside of the flues, removes 'all obstructions, and forces the same through and out ofthe other` end of the same, thus completely cleaning the Hoes, leaving them as free from obstructions as when new.
What I claim as my invention,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the spreader c, flue-end e, pipe a, flange b, and rib d, when constructed as herein set forth;
