Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 11, 1916.
Application mea apra so, Y1914. semaine. 835,386.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MICHAEL P. FLEMING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Supplementary tress, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful mattress support, and the object of this invention is the production of a mattress support or supplementary mattress which is adapted to give stiffness to an ordinary mattress and prevent the latter from being pressed into the springs of a bed thereby making small depressions which are uncomfortable to users of the mattress.
A further object is the production of a simple and effective mentioned.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrange-..
ments of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
T he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a view, supplementary mattress embodying my invention, showing show the break therein, Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental longitudinal section.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a frame made up of rigid end members 4 and rigid side members 5 arranged on edge and secured together in any approved manner in rectangular form. EX- tending longitudinally between the ends 4 are ribs 6 of rigid material spaced apart and secured to said ends by means of nails 7, or their equivalent passing through the ends and the covering to be vmentioned hereinafter. Spaced apart and loosely mounted between the ribs 6 are short ribs 8. The ribs 8 are also of rigid material and are held in position by means of the lcovering 9 and filling material l0 of the supplementary mattress. The covering 9 and filling material 10 are the ordinary substances for like purposes in ordinary mattresses. The covering 9 is secured tothe device by means Mat'- i device of the character in perspective, of a one end slightly lowered to of stitchings l1 passing through said covering and the filling material 10. The stitchings 11 are similarto the ordinary stitching used inv mattress-construction.
. In smaller sizes of bedsY my supplementary mattress in one piece, but in larger sizes such as illustratedI prefer to divide the supplementary mattress in two sections and hingev these sections together by means of a portion lZf the vlower side of covering 9, see Figs. 1` and B. This provides a means for doubling the mattress into smaller space and ient for handling. to the frame of the vice from givingv readily in small areas into a bed spring kon which it Vmay be used, and the ribs 8 provided for slight movement, since they are not -secured to the ribs 6, permitting slight that in use, the device is yieldable and still firm enough toy prevent the spring from4 being depressed unevenly under the weight of a person.
making it more conven- The ribs 6 being secured v '6o I prefer to make device prevents the den flexibility to the device so4 While I have illustrated and described the Y preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as vcome within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. vA supplementary mattress comprising av rigid rectangular-frame; parallel spaced rigidv ribs extending across and secured at their ends to said frame: a covering enveloping said frame; andv filling material between said ribs lin said covering, substana rigid rectangular frame; a covering enveloping said frame; parallel spaced rigid ribs in and having their ends secured to said *said ribs f-andffsaid filling frame, the edges of said ribs engaging said covering; short spaced parallel rigid ribs in said frame and between said first mentioned ribs and at right angles tothe latter; 'and filling material between said ribs yin said covering, substantially as described.
4. A supplementary mattress comprising a rigid rectangular frame; a covering enveloping said frame; parallel spaced rigid ribs in and having their ends secured to said frame,Y the edges of said ribs engaging' said covering; short spaced parallel rigid ribs in said frame and between said first mentioned ribs and at right angles to the latter; Alling material between-"said ribsin said covering; and ties vpassingthrough said vfilling material andcovering binding the'latterf against i material,"substan tially `as described.
'5. iai-supplementary mattress comprising arigid rectangular frame; a covering enveloping V`said frame; Va `plurality of' spaced rigid ribs-'eXten'ding longitudinally vof' vsaid frame; nails passing through `said covering andl frame and into the ends 'off-said ribs; `a Yplurality of short: spaced rigid ribs disposed Atransversely iofsaidframe A and positioned between 'said first Vmentioned ribs andthe "sides 'of' 'said :frame filling material inV said covering and between said ribs and frame a rigid vref'ztangular substantially portions; andties th'ro'u-ghsaid filling material and covering binding the latter against said frame and ribs, substantially as described.
6. A supplementary mattress comprising a rigid rectangular frame, a plurality of ribs arranged within said frame, certain of' said ribs being rigidly connected to said frameand the remaining ribs being' adapted for limited vertical movement, a filling arranged between said lribs and a cov'eringfenveloping said frame'and filling, 'substantially as' described.
7. A' supplementary `inzittr'ess comprising frame, parallel spaced rigid 'ribs fixedly secured ywithin said frame, short 'spaced parallelk ribs arranged between the .first mentioned ribs and at substantially right angles theretogt'he last mentioned ribs Vhaving' limited vertical movement, "a filling l50 arranged between said ribs, and a covering,
as described.
ln testimony whereof I have name to this sp'ecific'ationf'in the two subscribing witnesses.
