'I1- tl 1e drawings. already referred to, which serve to illustrate this invention more fully,- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead provided with our improved sanitary mattress. Fig. 2 isa similar view of the mattress detached. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, parts being shown broken to disclose underlying construction. Fig. 4 is a side-view of the mattress-frame. a similar view of the mattress completed, the ventilating openings being omitted. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a portion of the mattress. in line m a: of Fig. 3, the springs in the mattress being omitted. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the bed-cloth showing the rubberhose connection with the same.

The object of this invention is. the production of an efiicient and durable sanitary mattress. To attain this end we construct this mattress of a wooden, rectangular frame A, Figs. 3, 4, and 5, of proper width and length to fit asingle or double bed, as the case may be, said frame being of a suitable height and having in its four corners diagonal braces B to stiffen the structure and in its-center a cross-bar or slat C to prevent spreading of the sides of said frame. In the outer St aces of the sides and ends of this frame t ere is a groove D, Figs. 4 and 6, the object of which will hereinafter more fully appear.

E is a series of webbing secured to the top and bottom edges of the'ends of the Fig. 0 1s or other suitable materialI, which may be sewed to the. outer and inner sheets, and this covering, is secured to the frame A by forcing the edges of the inner and outer sheets into the grooves D in the frame A and fastening then1 therein by tacks, after which a tape J, is placed over the adjoining edges of said covers, to finish off the struc ture, said tape being secured to the frame by means of upholstery-nails K having comparatively large heads as shown in the various figures.

L is a series of gromets passed through the outer and inner layers and the filling of the covering'of the frame A and retained by washers N, Fig. 6, thereby securely uniting the covering and at the same time provide passages or ducts P for the escape of air from the interiorof the mattress, said gromets L being comparatively large in diameter so as to afford an ample passage for the air.

It will be observed that this mattress as described is reversible, that is to say, either side thereof may be placed uppermost into the bedstead Q. i

For the use of infants, invalids andother. persons, we provide this mattress with an auxiliary sheet, R, which is preferably removably secured to the covering H, by means of buttons S, Fig. 1, so that it may be re 100 auxiliary sheet, for which we prefer'rubber 105 cloth or oil-cloth, or other fabric impervious to liquids, is to provide for means to conduct urine from the bed to a receptacle V, Fig. 1, whenever the mattress is used by infants and other persons requiring such 119 services, said hose being passed through one of the passages P in the gromets L, in an obvious manner.

We will here call attention to the fact that the compound covering for the frame A not only reaches across the top and bottom sur- .faces thereof, but also covers the sides and we claim as new and desire to secure to us by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A mattress, comprising in combination a'rectangular frame having diagonal corner braces and an intermediate transverse crossbrace, and havinga continuous longitudinal groove formed entirely around its outer sides, a plurality of interwoven longitudinal and transverse fabric bands secured to the sides and ends of said frame at thetop and bottom thereof, a series of springs secured between said upper and lower interwoven bands at their intersections, coverings. for said frame comprisinga sheet of fabric secured to said frame at its top audlbottom sides and lying against said interwoven bands, batting laid on each of said sheets,

and outer sheets laid on each layer of batting the edges of said sheets being crimped into and secured in said continuous groove, a series of gromets in each of said coverings, the gromets in the upper covering registering' vertically with the gromets inthe lower covering, a supplemental removable sheet adapted to button along the sides of the mattress and having-an aperture adapted to register with one of said gromets and a con- .duit coupled to said supplemental sheet at said aperture and projected through registering gromets.

2. A mattress, comprising in combination a rectangular frame having diagonal corner braces and an intermediate transverse crossbrace, and having a continuouslongitudinal groove formed entirely around He outer sides,- a plurality of mterwoven longitudinal and; transverse fabric bands secured to the sides and ends of said frame at the top and bottom thereof, a series of springs secured between said upper and lower interwoven bands at their intersections, covermgs for said frame comprising a sheet of fabric secured to said frame at its top and bottom sides and lying against said interwoven band's, batting laid on each of said sheets, and outer sheets laid on each layer of batting the edges of said sheets being crimped into and secured in said continuous groove, a series of gromets in each of said coverings, the gromets in the upper covering registering vertically with the gromets in the lower eovering, and a flexible beading bound over said groove to retain the edges of said sheets thereon.
