Description

"No. 804,354. PATENTED NOV. 14, 1905. N. J. WALLS. SANITARY 001; BED MATTRESS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 25. 1905.
mtywssess .f u/enfflrx NANCY JANE WALLS, OF 'POZO, CALIFORNIA.
SANITARY WOOL BED-MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed January 25.1905. Serial No. 242,701.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NANCY JANE WALLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at P020, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Wool Bed-Mattress, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mattresses, one of the objects being to provide a sanitary bed-mattress that shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, durable, and that will not wad or lump and one which can be easily taken apart for cleaning or other purposes.
Other objects and advantages of myinvention, as Well as the structural features by means of which these objects are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding portions throughout, and in which- Figure 1. is a perspective view of my im proved mattress and having one corner of the outer covering opened to show the layers within, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a portion of one of the layers.
1 designates a layer which is preferably constructed of wool rolled out into the form of a quilt or blanket and then placed between covers 2, of flannel or any other suitable material, said covers being connected at intervals by the threads 3, which pass through the wool. The ends of each cover project beyond the edge of the layer of wool, as shown at 4, each end being folded upon itself so as not to leave a rough edge.- These folded edges are then connected at desired intervals by a thread 5.
Forming a binding for each layer is a roll 6, of wool or other suitable material, inclosed in a covering 7, the ends of said covering being brought together and sewed or stitched, as shown at 8, and lapped to form a horizontal extension through which the threads 5 pass, said threads afi'ording means whereby said roll or binding is held securely in place.
My mattress is constructed of a plurality of the layers just described, any desired number being used. These completed layers are placed on top of each other, as shown in Fig. 1, and the whole incased in a covering or bedtick 9 and tied to hold them in place.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A mattress comprising folded layers of wool inclosed in covers the ends of which are folded on each other and connected by threads, a plurality of threads passing through the wool and connecting the covers at intervals, a binding for each layer comprising a roll of wool inclosed in a cover having its edges brought together and sewed or stitched in lapped position to form a horizontal extension through which passes the threads connecting the folded ends of the covers and whereby said binding is held in position, and a suitable covering or casing for the layers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NANCY JANE WALLS.
