To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE T. Henn- MAN'S, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in th county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in m attressss, and its obj act is to provide a sectional felt construction that will add greatly to the resiliency and durability of the mattress, and will increase the comfort of persons using the same.
The object is more specifically to provide a mattress constructed of layers of felt card ed from cotton, wool, or other like material, the layers or sections being folded upon themselves in such. a manner as to place the fibers in a vertical position, thus bringing into play their natural longitudinal resiliency, which is not utilized when the felt sections lie in a horizontal position as in constructions heretofore used.
With the above object in View, my invention has relation to certain novel features of the construction, which features are described in the following specification, illus trated in the accompanying drawing, and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress in which are embodied the novel features of the resent invention, a portion of the fabric fiirming the outer casing being broken away to reveal the peculiar sectional constructio Fig. *2 is a perspective detail view of one of the layers I of felt used in the mattress, before said layer has been folded. Fig. 3 is a per spective detail view of one of the feltlayers partially folded, the extremities of the layer having been turn-ed over upon the middle portion thereof Fig. 4 is a perspective detail View of one of the layers or sections completely folded and in condition to form a part of the mattress.
A suiiicient number of the folded sections illustrated in Fig. l are placed side by side to give the desired bulk to the mattress.
These are then incloscd in a suitable ticking to which they are attached by tufting and stitching through the mattress, as shown in the right-hand portion of Fig. 1.
While the above-described construction is mainly designed for use in mattresses, it is obvious that this construction might also be applied to cushions, and upholstery of various sorts.
What I claim is:
A mattress comprising a plurality of units, and a casing containing the same, each unitconsisting of afoldd layer of felt, the felt ,fibers being in. parallel planes transverse of the folds, the vertical portions of the units being comparatively elongated and extending between the top and the bottom of the casing.
