0. M. BURTON. MATTRESS AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED SEI-'12.3

OLIVER M. BURTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MATTRESS AND THE LIKE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
pplcation filed September 3, 1910. Serial No. 580,386.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLimR M. BURTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact' description.
The improvement relates to mattresses, cushions and the like in which a series of spiral springs are employed to increase the resiliency of the mattress and maintain it in proper form.
The invention seeks to provide a simple and effective means by which the spring construction on the mattress can be readily and economically assembled and which will serve to securely but flexibly hold the individual springs in position, so that they will maintain the proper shape of the mattress or cushion and cannot cause a disagreeable grating sound as they are compressed or expanded.
The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a corner of the improved mattress or cushion. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the upper layer of the filling material removed and the inner covering or casing, to which the springs are connected, exposed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the improved mattress. Fig. 4 is a cross section of a modified form. y
The improved spring construction may be applied to mattresses or cushions of different types, but is particularly applicable to hollow or self renovating mattresses such as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, and to box springs having upholstered tops, such as shown in Fig. 4. y
The mattress shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, comprises an outer tick or covering 1 of suitable flexible material or fabric, an inner casing or spring covering 2, and an intermediate filling 3 of pliable material. The inner casing or covering 2 within which the spiral springs 4 are arranged is formed of stout flexible material, preferably burlap. The Spiral springs Ltare preferably of the hour glass type and are arranged Within the inner casing or covering 2 in rows in the usual manner. The end coils 5 of the spiral springs extend through the upper and lower layers of the inner casing or covering 2 and are secured thereto by flexible strips 6 which are woven through the end coils. The end coils 5, in the preferred form of the invention, are closed and the upper and lower layers of the casing or coverin 2 are `provided with a series of parallel s its 7 which are preferably arranged in pairs and through which opposite portions of each end coil extend, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2. The flexible strips 6 extend over the outer surfaces of the covering 2 and are woven through the portions of the end coils or rings 5 which extend through the slits 7 to thereby secure the springs at their upper and lower ends to the covering. The ends of the strips 6 are fastened to a suitable portion of the mattress and are preferably secured to the inner covering 2 at the seam 8 (see Fig. 3), which unites the upper and lower layers of' the casing or covering 2 at the edge of the mattress. This spring construction can be economically assembled, since the closed end coils or rings 5 of the springs can be readily inserted in the slits 7 and the strips 6 quickly Vwoven therethrough. The strips are preferably of a width nearly equal to the length of the slits 7, so that the springs are securely held in position to thereby preserve the form of the mattress and to prevent any contacting and grating of the coils of the springs as they are compressed or expanded. -The inner casing or covering 2 to which the ends of the springs are connected is held in positionby the quilting stitches 9 which unite it to the outer ticking and by a stitching 10 which extends through the corners of the outer ticking and through the corners of the inner casing to formrounded upper and lower edge portions 11 of the mattress. The filling 3 may be of any suitable pliable material, such as cotton, hair or other suitable fiber and is preferably arranged in layers extending around the inner casing or spring covering 2. f
The box spring construction shown in Fig. t comprises a frame 12 of wood or other suitable material havingcross slats 13 to which the lower ends of the springs 4t are secured. The construction is provided with an upholstered top comprising an outer ticking 1, which preferably extends around the frame 12 and beneath v.the slats 13, an inner casing or spring covering 2 and an vinner and outer flexible coverings and intermediate filling 3. The springs l aie united to the inner covering Q in the manner already described, that is to say, the closed end coils 5 extend through the slits 7 in the covering and flexible cross pieces or strips (l and extend over the outer face of the covering and are woven through the endI coils. In this construction the ends of the strips 6 and the edge of the covering Z extend over and are secured to a border rod 14 and are fastened to the frame 12.
The improved construction, be economically assembled, is extremely durable and resilient and maintains the. shape of the mattress and the individual springs are held in proper position.
It is obvious thaty changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claims.
I claim as my inventioiir l. In mattresses and the like, the combination with an upholstered top comprising inner and outer flexible coverings and an intermediate pliable-filling, of a series of as stated, can
spiral supporting springs having their end coils extending through said inner covering, and flexible cross strips woven through said end coils to secure the saine to said inner covering.
2. In mattresses and the like, the combination with an upholstered top comprising an intermediate pliable filling, of a series of spiral supporting springs having their end coils extending through said inner covering, and flexible strips ext-ending over the outer face of said inner covering and woven through said end coils.
3. In mattresses and the like, the combination with an upholstered top comprising inner andouter flexible coverings and an nterrnedialiegpliable filling, of a series of spiral supporting springs having their end coils extending through said inner covering, and flexible cross stri s woven through said end coils, the ends of said cross strips and the edges of saidv inner covering being secured together and to said outer covering.
4. In a spring construction for mattresses and the like, a series of spiral springs, a flexible covering extending over said springs and havin slits through which the end coils of said springs extend, and flexible cross strips woven through said end coils, substantially as described.
5. In a spring construction for mattresses and the like, a series of spiral springs, a
l l l l l flexible covering extending over said springs and having slits through which opposite portions of each of the end coils of said springs extend, and flexible strips extending over the outer face of said covering and '.Wo'ven through said end coils.
through which opposite portions of each of said end coils extend, and flexible cross strips extending over the outer surface of said covering, and Woven through said end coils.
S. In a spring construction for mattresses and the like, a series of spiral springs having closed end coils, a fabric covering extending over of parallel slits through which opposite portions of each of 'said end coils extend, and a series of parallel, wide, fabric strips extending over the outer face of said cover` ing, woven through said end coils and suitably fastened at their ends.
9. A hollow mattress comprising a series of spiral springs, an inner flexible casing or covering extending over said springs and through which the upper and lower end coils of said springs extend, a series of flexible cross strips woven through said end coils to secure the same to said inner casing, an outer tick, a filling of pliable material between said tick and said inner casing, and stitching forming upper and lower rounded corners of the mattress and uniting said outer tick and inner casing.
10. A hollow mattress comprising an outer tick, an inner flexible casing, an intermediate pliable filling, a series of spiral springs having closed end coils arranged within said inner casing, the upper and lower layers of said inner casing having slits through which said end coils extend, and flexible strips extending over the outer surfaces of said inner covering, woven through said end coils and fastened to said inner casing at their ends.
