Be it known that I, LESLIE H. VINCENT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchvas will enable others skilled in the-art to which it appertains to make and use the same.A 4

My invention relates to improvements in sanitary mattresses, and its object is to provide a mattress that can be conveniently taken apart and reassembled, as occasion may require, for the purpose of fumigating, airing, and washing the various parts of the same, and to provide the same with a casing having various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in t-he claims.

My invention consists preferably of a. series of thin pads or layers of suitable yieldable material, each layer being inclosed in a suitable fabric and made thin and foraminous enough to be readily aired and fumigated when removed from the outer casing, and an outer casing readily detachable and made of a fabric adapted to be washed or otherwise renovated, as willmore fully appea-r by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective of a device embodying my invention shown with the bottom upward; Fig. 2 an enlarged transverse section of the same; and Fig. 3 a perspective detail of one 0f the pads.

The outer removable casing of this device consists of integral side portions 1 a top portion 1a permanent-ly attached to each other, which top portion when in use, is turned uppermost, the device being shown inverted in the drawings to more readily show the construction of the same. The bottom la of t-he case is adapted to be opened to remove the contents of the mattress, and for this purpose is preferably formed with a central rectangular portion 2, side marginal portions 3, and end mar ginal portions 4, the said portions being joined to each other at the corners by diagonal lacings 5 and the central portion attached permanently at one end to one of the marginal portions 4, and attached to the other marginal portions 3 and '4 by lacings 6, whereby by removingr all of the lacings, the entire bottom can be wholly opened out ward to readily remove the contents or replace the same, which latter consists of a series of thin pads `7 formed of any suitable resilient material, such as batting, felt, curled hair or the like secured between any suitable porous fabric in any suitable manner, and preferably each pad is left open at the ends to further facilitate airing and fumigating the contents thereof.

From the foregoing description, the operation of the device will be readily understood. Each pad being thin and light is easily penetrated by air or fumes and also easily otherwise cleared of dust or renovated and the outer casing easily removed and washed or otherwise cleaned, and the device` again readily assembled.

To take the strain off the fabric of the bottom of the casing and the lacing, I pro vide transversely disposed straps 8 at intervals attached at the ends to the casing near the edges of the bottom as at 9, and divided near the middle and provided with buckles or other detachable fastenings which are detached when removing and replacing the filling material.

The device thus provides a sanitary device of great utility, especially in hospitals, hotels, and other like places.

What I claim is l.
