tate of Michigan, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Sanitary Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates generally to the 1mprovements in mattresses and relates more particularly to mattresses which can be maintained in sanitary condition.

The general object of my invention is to provide a mattress which can be readily and thoroughly cleaned throughoutall its parts; and further objects of my mvention'are to provide a mattress which shall be so convenient to dis-assemble and to assemble as to invite frequent and thorough cleaning of all the parts; which can be easily handled by the average attendant; and which shall be so formed to admit of complete fumlgation should same be desirable or necessary.

A further object of my invention is to provide a mattress which can be conveniently and quickly taken apart and reassembled, as occasion may require, for the purpose of fumigating, airing and washingthe various parts of the same, and to provide the same with a casing in which is positioned a plurality of pads, the casing being completely covered by a covering and all of the parts subject to being removed and thoroughly aired and cleaned.

A still further object of my inventlon is to provide a mattress construction in which the mattress proper shall be protected against soiling by a covering which can be readily removed and washed to the end that this covering may be frequently changed and thus more completely maintain the mattress proper 1n sanitary condition.

My invention consists generally in a mattress comprising a plurality of associated separable parts together with means for removably securing the parts together for use.

My invention consists still further in a mattress structure comprising a plurality of separable associated parts inclosed within a sectional casing which casing maintains the associated parts in proper relation and permits convenient removal of the various parts for the purpose of airing, cleaning, fumigating, etc.

My invention consists still further in the form, constructlon', arrangement and cooper ation of the parts wvhereby the above named objects together with others which will appear hereinafter are attainable, and my invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the construction which I consider the best at the present time.

Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the complete mattress as made in accordance with this invention taken through the casing illustrating the manner in which the device is assembled.

Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that I provide a casing which is constructed of canvas or any other flexible material suitable for the purpose and this casing comprises in this instance a bottom section 1 and top section 2. The bottom section 1, comprises a bottom wall 3, side walls 4, and end walls 5. The side. and

4 and 5, are formed of a single piece of material looped at its medial portion as at 6, and has its opposite edges bent back upon themselves as at 7, and stitched on opposite sides of the edges of the bottom 3, as at 8. The side and

4, and 5, are so constructed as to completely surround the edge of the bottom 3, and are connected thereto by the stitches 8, which form a com plete bottom section 1. This construction provides fairly rigid side walls which, as will be seen, serve to maintain the mattress pads in proper alinement and firmly hold them against relative shifting.

The top section 2, comprises in this instance a wall 9, which has its peripheral edge curved slightly downward as at 10, and has secured thereto side and

11 and 12 of the top section 2, are formed of a single piece of material which is folded back at its medial portion as t 13, and its opposite edges are bent back upon themselves as at 14 and are arranged to be secured to the inwardly curved portion 10 of the wall 9. An attaching strip 15, has one of its edges bent back upon itself as at 16, and is disposed between the curved portion 10 and. one end 14, of the side and

11 and 12 of the top section. The bent back portions 14, are secured to the curved portion 10 of the wall 9 of the section 2, and to the bent back port-ion 16, of the attaching flange 15, by suitable stitches or the like designated at 17. Thus the top section is' constructed. The top section 2, is preferably hingedly secured to the upper longitudinal edge of one side wall 4, of the bottom section 3, with suitable stitches or the like designated 19, which permits the top section to be fully opened so that the contents of the section may be removed.

4 and 5, of the bottom 3, are provided adjacent their upper edge with a plurality of relatively spaced openings 20, which are adapted to cooperate with the spaced openings 21, formed in the attaching flange 15, which is carried by the top section. Thus it will be understood that when the top section is forced into the bottom section that the flange 15, will overlie the upper edges of the side and end walls of the bottom section and the openings 21, alined with the openings 20 so that a suitable lacing device designated 22, may be inserted through the opening and the sections connected together.

I provide a plurality of thin pads 23, formed of any suitable material, such as batting, felt, curled hair, down or the like secured between a suitable porous fabrlc covering in any suitable manner. The ends of the covering are preferably fully stitched around so that the pads may be removed from the casing, without danger of separation, and fumigated, cleaned, washed or hung up to dry to the end that the contents will be thoroughly cleaned.

The casing is completely covered by a suitable fabric covering 24 (see Fig. 4) which is constructed of any suitable material such as linen, canvas or the like and it has both ends full open and positioned about the exterior o the casing 1. The' ends of the covering 24, are provided with suitable fasteners 25, which permit the ends to be fastened together and the extreme ends 26, are folded as at 27, toward each other and have secured thereto a suitable tape 28, which is tied as at 29, securely supporting the cover about the casing 1. v

A pair of reinforcing straps 30, are secured transversely about the covering 24, with suitable stitches or the like 31, and the side walls of the strap are left free as at 32,

to form handles 33, which facilitate the re-' moving of the covering from the casing 1, when it, is desired to thoroughly air and fumigate the contents thereof. I

The structure disclosed not only contains the pads in conveniently separable condition but also holds them when in position against relative shifting, bunching, etc.,.to the end that the device when assembled is to all intents and purposes as comfortable and serviceable as a one-piece mattress.

In the assembling of the device, the lacing 22, is removed from the

21 and 20, and the top section 2, is lifted up on the stitches 19. The pads 23, are placed within the lower section 3, and the top section is then forced downwardly and laced by the lacing 22, extending through the

20 and 21. The casing is then complete y covered by the covering 24,- the ends of which are secured in the manner described.

It thus becomes clear that the structure herein shown and described attains the ob- ]eCtS and purposes outlined in the opening of the specification, but since this disclosure will suggest certain modifications to others whereby the substantial objects of my invention may be attained, I do not wish to be limited to the specific structure shown and described except only as may be necessary by limitations in the hereunto appended claims.

I claim 1. A sanitary mattress comprising a casing including sections, one of said sections comprising a bottom wall, side and end walls the other section comprising a top wall, side and end walls and an attaching flange, said flange carrying section adapted to have its side and end walls located within the side and end walls of the first named section and the side and end walls of the first named section provided withopenings adapted to aline with openings in the flange whereby the sections may be laced together, and a covering for said casing asand for the purpose specified.

A sanitary mattress comprising a casing including top and bottom sections, said bottom section comprising. a bottom wall, side and end walls, said side and end walls being formed of a single piece of material bent on its medial portion and having its edge stitched to the edges of the bottom wall forming the bottom section, said top section comprising a top wall, side and end walls, the side and end walls of the top section formed of a single piece of material bent at its medial portion back upon itself and having its extreme edges bent inwardly and stitched to the edges of the top wall and an attaching flange carried by the top section, said side and end walls of the bottom section provided with a plurality of spaced openings, said attaching flange of the top section provided with openings adapted to aline with the openings in the walls of the bottom section permitting the sections to be laced In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set together, said top section hingedly secured my hand, this 8th day of March, 1917, in the to the bottom section and a plurality of pads presence of two subscribing witnesses. adapted to be removably arranged in the CARRIE LINMAN.
