SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,852, dated November 27, 1894. Application led February 12,1894. Serial No. 499,912. (No model.)

Be it known thatwe, HEINRICH BRUPBACHER and ERNST BRUPBACHER, citizens of Switzerland, residing at,Zurich,canton of Zurich, Republic of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cushions or Mattresses, of which the following is a specification. c

This invention relates to a new and useful air or water filled mattress as bedding and it consists in the following combinations of parts as d escribed hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of said receptacle before the mattress is inserted. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of said mattress.

Mattress A is made out of pure india rubber and its upper and lower faces are fastened together at several points as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the lower half A2 (which is permeable) of the mattress A, these attachment places are perforated, but in the upper portion A (which is not permeable) they need not be so constructed, although they may be perforated for Ventilating purposes if deemed desirable. Upon the two faces of the mattress at the points of attachment are laid india rubber or other washers or plates E, (Fig. 2.)

Through the upper and lower faces and these washers are run india rubber tubes D, (Figs. l, 2 and 6) and the tubes are pressed down upon these washers or plates upon both faces as indicated in Fig. 2. v

The receptacle B is made of some waterproof material and is so shaped as to cover the lower face and edges of the pervious part A2 of mattress A when the same is inserted therein. Around the edge of said receptacle f be tucked in.

is arim b which when the mattress is inserted in the receptacle, projects slightly over its upper face. The upper end b of the rim b may be fastened by buttoning or otherwise, tightly around the mattress A, when the said mattress is inserted in the receptacle as hereinafter indicated.

The outer covering or pocket C is made in the shape of the mattress A but is longer than said mattress, and extends beyond the foot of the same as shown in Fig. 1. Said covering is made so as to entirely envelop the mattress A and the receptacle B, with the exception of the part A2 of the mattress A, said part A2 being exposed through a rectangular opening c in said cover as shown in Figs. l and 4. c2 are side flaps attached to the receptacle C, which can be laid over the child lying on the mattress and are designed to hold the childfast, being fastened in position by means of the straps c3. The lower part of said cover may be unbuttoned from the buttons c4, and the feather pillow G can When so unbuttoned the receptacle B containing the mattress A can be inserted. The lower extremity of the pocket C is supplied with two straps or ears c5, by

which, when the lower part of the pocket C is folded over the upper part, (which may be done if desired,) it may be buttoned to the upper part at c6. c7 is a ribbon for decorative purposes.

The mattress A is filled with air or water by means of the stop-cock F, which may be secured to any part of the same. The receptacle B is then drawn over the lower part A2 of the mattress, the rim b of said receptacle projecting slightly over the top of the -mattress A2. Strip b is then fastened tightly around the same. The cover C is then unbuttoned at c4 and the mattress A (partly covered by receptacle B as above explained) is slipped into the same and rests therein in the position shown in Fig. 4., which has a portion of the covering C partly broken away. A feather pillow G can then be inserted in the lower part of said cover and the same again buttoned up. In order to prevent the slipping of the mattress and receptacle in the outer covering C, a pocket is sewed into said outer covering at c', into which the lower end of said mattress tits. The whole combination when so adjusted forms a useful article of bedding for children and invalids. A person lying upon the same will have his head resting over the upper portion A of the mattress f A, while the trunk rests upon the lower and head-rest A assuming a lower position than the' trunk-rest A2, flow under the head-rest A', strip b of the receptacle B is fastened tightly together, so that the urine cannot get farther than this strip. The urine may be removed from the receptacle by withdrawing the mattress and receptacle from the cover C, and loosening the strip b, when the urine may be readily poured out; or if preferred, the urine can be withdrawn by means of the stop-cock H.

In order that the person shall not lie directly upon the india rubber it is suggested that a piece of porous linen should be laid upon A2, which, when it has become moist, can be readily changed.

As bedding, the combination of an air or Water filled mattress made of pure india rubber with its two faces fastened together in several places as shown, rubber tubes inserted at said fastening places to carry on? urine and for Ventilating purposes, a receptacle partially enveloping said mattress to receive urine passed through the rubber tubes aforesaid, provided with a rim whose upper end can be tightly fastened around said mattress to prevent the urine from iiowing under the head-rest of the mattress, the whole being inserted in a pocket or ease having a rectangular opening and two side flaps, the upper part of said ease serving to hold the mattress and the lower part of said case a feather pillow, substantially as and for the purposes described and shown.
