Abstract

The present invention provides a sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus and method. The sewn fitted sheet pocket of the present invention prevents a user from turning over in their sleep; and comprises a fitted sheet, a sewn-on pocket sheet that forms a pocket with the fitted sheet, an attachment element for adjusting the fit of the pocket opening, and straps on the underside of the fitted sheet. The formed pocket is capable of fitting and securing a user, whether infant, child, or adult, in a manner for preventing him or her from turning over in his or her sleep while still ensuring at least adequate comfort. The fitted sheet with pocket sewn on is capable of being made to fit and apply to the dimensions of a crib, child bed, adult bed, or any other size and style of bed and secure thereto by a strap system across the fitted sheet mattress opening.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provides for a sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus and method. The sewn fitted sheet pocket of the present invention prevents a user from turning over in their sleep—a leading environmental factor in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome—by providing a pocket to comfortably secure and hold a user while they are sleeping. The pocket is sewn onto the fitted sheet and holds the user snuggly, but does not swaddle them, thus limiting the range of motion of the user only as necessary to prevent the user from turning over in their sleep.
The sewn fitted sheet pocket of the present invention is capable of being sized to fit adults or children by varying mattress sizes. One important use for the sewn fitted sheet pocket is for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome occurs when infants suddenly cease breathing, and it is a leading cause of death of infants up to a year old. Although it is thought there is a defect or failure of the genetic components involved with the development of an infant's brain in the portion that controls sleep arousal, the condition is typically only discovered if the infant passes as he or she is face down and smothered—being unable to breathe and wake himself or herself. The sewn fitted sheet pocket is also adaptable for use in other scenarios. For example, the sewn fitted sheet pocket may be useful in hospitals where patients are required to sleep in certain positions or are to be kept from turning over, and in nursing homes to ensure that the elderly maintain a safe sleeping position.
The sewn fitted sheet pocket solves the above described problems of infants and disabled adults turning over and smothering themselves in their sleep, but also allows for comfort to be maintained, allowing for sleep to be both easily achieved and maintained without risk to life or comfort. For instance, for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in particular, if an apparatus keeps the infant tightly swaddled, then the infant will not be comfortable thus resulting in poor sleep and possibly poor circulation. Therefore, it is necessary to balance comfort with prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The present invention allows securing the fit of the pocket to allow the tightness and comfort level to be adjusted according to need.
The invention is based upon a fitted sheet, and is therefore easy to manufacture, apply, and use on a bed of any size. However, certain precautions should be taken to ensure that the sheet maintains its fit to the bed as a failure of the sheet would negate the desired benefits of preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and/or sleep turnover. Therefore, the present invention further ensures the sewn fitted sheet pocket remains in place around the bed and user despite the user's attempt to be active in his or her sleep by kicking, shaking, or otherwise moving.
Although there are solutions for preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and/or preventing sleep turnover, they are not able to also accommodate the need for a good night's sleep as they swaddle the user too tightly, are comparatively cumbersome to use, and are inadequately able to maintain position on the bed if the user struggles.
For instance, U.S. Pat. No. 2,851,703 for a “Fitted Sleeping Cover,” as issued on Sep. 16, 1958 to inventor Charles C. Greco, provides for a fitted sleeping cover for use with a mattress of a pre-selected size. Of note, a detachable infant retaining pocket, the lower end of which may be flared, according to one embodiment may be affixed to the cover by buttons or by some other means such as a zipper or snap fasteners. The retaining pocket may be lined with some waterproof material and edge-trimmed for comfort with an edging of satin or some other smooth, attractive material. To make the infant retaining pocket an extensible “grow bag,” transverse lines of removable stitching may be sewn at intervals completely across the pocket and near its foot end. As the infant grows, the stitching may be let out so that the “grow bag” grows with the infant. Due to its construction, therefore, an improved fitted sleeping cover is provided which comfortably enfolds a sleeping person, infant or adult, and yet cannot be easily displaced in the course of the ordinary movements taking place during sleep. It is to be understood that the invention may be applied to a fitted sheet, fitted blanket, or to any other type of sleeping cover.
U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2007/0157384 for an “Infant's Safety Bedding to Reduce SIDS,” as published on Jul. 12, 2007 by inventor Jeanette Alexander, discloses an infant's bedding article that reduces the occurrence of SIDS, where the article has a fitted sheet for a mattress and a partially fitted covering that is connected to the fitted sheet. The partially fitted covering has an infant size covering panel with an opening top edge, a fitted bottom edge, a fitted side edge, a partially fitted opposing side edge, and an extension panel. The extension panel is coextending from the infant size covering panel. The extension panel extends beyond the partially fitted opposing side edge, and the extension panel is not fitted, and therefore it enables the opening top edge to be turned down when laying the baby on their back on the mattress. The extension panel is sufficiently long that it can be tucked under the mattress. The fitted sheet and the partially fitted covering are joined where the sheet and covering are fitted.
U.S. Pat. No. 2,702,385 for a “Baby Blanket Garment,” as issued on Feb. 22, 1955 to inventor Harry H. Goldberg, provides for a baby blanket garment adapted to hold and protect a baby with superior freedom, security, and comfort. The garment more particularly embodies a blanket in conjunction with a bag for holding the baby at the bottom face of the blanket. The bag is preferably constructed of waterproof fabric of a character to give desired warmth and comfort and is provided with draw strings for closing its mouth onto the baby beneath its arms. The baby is thus securely enclosed in the bag and since the bag is preferably constructed independently of the blanket means is provided for carrying the bag with the baby therein on the bottom face of the blanket. The blanket is provided with two arm holes and constructed to hold the mouth of the bag adjacent to these holes whereby the baby can rest comfortably under the blanket while supported in the bag. The bag is furthermore so disposed on the blanket that the blanket can be folded laterally and upwardly to form a protective carrying cradle about the baby.
U.S. Pat. No. 7,370,377 for a “Crib Safety Sheet/Blanket,” as issued on May 13, 2008 to assignee Safety Roo, Inc., provides for a crib safety sheet and separable blanket with a sheet portion for selectively removing at least the blanket from the sheet, when the sheet is attached to a sleep surface. The separable blanket defining at least two edges for wrapping the blanket about an infant. The blanket may be removed from the sheet by separating the blanket, or by separating a sheet material portion attached to the blanket, from the sheet covering the sleep surface.
U.S. Pat. No. 7,150,054 for a “Safety Apparatus and Method of Use,” as issued on Dec. 19, 2006 to assignee Mommy's Little Helpers, LLC, provides for body orienting harnesses and associated structures, along with methods of use. The body orienting harness can position a body, such an infant, with respect to the associated structure, such as a bed, bed frame or crib, a sheet, or a blanket for example. The harness may be integrated with a sheet or blanket in order to secure not only a body in position but also secure the sheet or blanket in position with respect to the body. The sheet, blanket, or other cover can provide a slip cover for an underlying support surface, such as a mattress for example. Alternatively, the cover can be secured in other ways to form a pocket in association with other structure, such as a bed sheet for example. The harness can be mounted in association with the pocket to secure a body in position with the respect to the pocket and associated structure, such as a mattress, crib, etc. When used to secure an infant during sleep, certain embodiments of the harness and associated structure can help significantly reduce the chance of overheating, suffocating, or otherwise harming the infant.
U.S. Pat. No. 8,276,224 for a “Bed Sheet with Integrated Sleeping Garment,” as issued on Oct. 2, 2012 to inventors Joanna von Yurt et al., provides for a bed sheet that includes a bottom fabric layer sized to extend over the sides of and underneath a mattress. A top fabric layer is generally co-extensive with, and fastened to, the bottom fabric layer and defines a pocket therebetween. A sleeping garment integrated into the top fabric layer has a pair of garment halves removably coupleable to each other via a zipper that zips up into a fastener pocket that covers the zipper when the garment is fully closed. A flap can extend from one half of the garment, over the fastener pocket and fasten to the opposite half of the garment to inhibit the user from unzipping and removing the garment. The garment can hold a lower portion of the user within said pocket, allowing the user to remain warm without the use of a separate blanket, while being able to sit or stand on the mattress.
U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2010/0242172 for a “Multi-Mode Child Sleeping Bag,” as published on Sep. 30, 2010 by inventors Kristy Lijesen et al., discloses a sleeping bag comprising a bed sheet and a cover sheet secured together at a first end and optionally at a portion of the sides to form a sleeping pocket. The bed sheet includes pad pockets at both ends, for example, to secure the sleeping bag to a bed pad. In an embodiment, the cover sheet includes a reversible cover pocket at one end to secure the cover sheet in certain modes of operation. In an embodiment, the sleeping bag further comprises a blanket sheet disposed between the bed sheet and a cover sheet to provide added comfort. In an embodiment, slits can be included for sliding harness to secure the sleeping bag to a moveable seat, such as a stroller or car seat.
Lastly, U.S. Pat. No. 7,584,515 for “Snuggle Pockets,” as issued on Sep. 8, 2009 to inventors Dianna Jones et al., provides for a fitted sheet-blanket suitable for use with a crib or bassinet mattress. The fitted sheet-blanket can include a pocket coverlet securely detachable on a top of the fitted sheet-blanket to form an open-ended pocket, and a pillow securely detachable on the top of the fitted sheet-blanket and located above the open-ended pocket. The pocket coverlet can include one or more detachable inserts to provide an adjustable depth of the pocket relative to the pillow.
Therefore, there exists a need for a sewn fitted sheet pocket that is able to restrict users from turning over in their sleep, while still allowing a comfortable sleep, and is resistant to displacement due to movements during sleep.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The current invention provides a sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus and method that is capable of fitting and securing to a bed to as to hold users in its sewn pocket in a comfortable manner to prevent them from turning over in their sleep.
It is, therefore, an objective of the present invention to provide an area for the user to rest in by providing a pocket of a size capable of fitting the intended user.
It is further an objective of the present invention to fit to a bed by securing to the bed as a fitted sheet having straps running underneath the bed, keeping the fitted sheet in place.
It is further an objective of the present invention to secure the pocket to the fitted sheet by means of the art of sewing.
It is further an objective of the present invention to not swaddle the user, but instead snuggle them, by merely keeping the pocket tight enough to prevent turning over in the sleep but no tighter.
It is further an objective of the present invention to allow for some movement of the user to allow for the user's comfort when sleeping by maintaining the pocket depth from two-thirds of the way up the bed to the bottom of the bed and only being restricted at the opening of the pocket.
It is further an objective of the present invention to allow for easy entry and exit into the pocket by keeping the pocket entry point adjustable by buttons, elastic strap, sew-on snaps, or other elastic or attachment means.
It is further an objective of the present invention to fit to cribs by being made in a size desirable for infants.
It is further an objective of the present invention to fit to beds by being made in a size desirable for adults.
It is further an objective of the present invention to fit all range of beds by being made in a size desirable to fit the bed.
The present invention achieves these objectives by providing a pocket sewn onto a fitted sheet capable of being made to fit and apply to the dimensions of a crib, child bed, adult bed, or any other size and style of bed and secure thereto by a strap system across the fitted sheet mattress opening. The formed pocket is capable of fitting and securing a user, whether infant, child, or adult, in a manner for preventing him or her from turning over in his or her sleep while still ensuring at least adequate comfort.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Referring to FIGS. 1-5, generally, the figures depict a perspective view of the version of the sewn fitted sheet pocket 100 of the present invention fitted onto a child's bed. The sewn fitted sheet pocket for a child's bed 100 of the present invention comprises a fitted sheet 110, a sewn-on pocket sheet 120 that forms a pocket 122 with the fitted sheet 110, an attachment element 130 for adjusting the fit of the pocket opening 124 such as buttons 132, sew-on snaps 134, hook-and-loop strips 136, an elastic strap 138, or other attachment means, and straps 112 on the underside of the fitted sheet 110.
The fitted sheet 110 is of any such size and style to fit a crib mattress 140. The fitted sheet 110 itself may thus be the typical fitted sheet used for a crib mattress. As shown in FIG. 5, the fitted sheet 110 further includes at least one strap 112 placed across the mattress opening of fitted sheet 110 so that when the fitted sheet 110 is on the crib mattress 140, the strap 112 with buckle 114 prevents the fitted sheet 110 from untucking and falling off the crib mattress 140. Straps 112 are operationally attached so that in a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the straps 112 may be across the underside girth of the child mattress 140 as shown in FIG. 5; but in an alternate version of the invention, the straps 112 may be placed across the corners of the child mattress 140 from the tucked side of the fitted sheet 110 to the adjacent side of the fitted sheet 110. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the strap 112 includes a buckle 114 to allow for both easy securing and removal of the fitted sheet 110. The buckle 114 may be placed in the center of the strap 112, as shown in FIG. 5, for the child mattress 140 is small and easy to get under. However, the buckle 114 may be placed anywhere along the straps 112.
Sewn or otherwise similarly attached by needle and thread to the fitted sheet 110 is a pocket sheet 120. The pocket sheet 120 may be a similar or differing fabric material or style from fitted sheet 110. The pocket sheet 120 is a sheet sewn onto the fitted sheet 110 thereby forming a pocket 122 on the exposed side of the fitted sheet 110 when the fitted sheet is correctly on the child mattress 140. The exposed side of the fitted sheet 110 is the side of the sheet designed to be exposed when the fitted sheet 110 is correctly placed on the crib mattress 140. The pocket 122 is formed by sewing the pocket sheet 120 so that the pocket opening 124 faces the head 142 of the crib mattress 140 and lays across the girth of the crib mattress 140, in the area one third to two-thirds of the crib mattress 140 up from the end of the crib mattress 140. This configuration is to allow the user of the sewn fitted sheet pocket 100 to be inserted into pocket 122 so that they are covered up to or between their armpit or waist area.
The pocket sheet is sewn into the portion of the fitted sheet 110 that rests on the top portion of crib mattress 140 when the fitted sheet is correctly placed on crib mattress 140 so that the edges of the pocket align with the side edges of crib mattress 140 and the lower end edges of the pocket align with the lower end edges of crib mattress 140, thus forming a quadrilateral encompassing the lower one-third to two-thirds of the portion of the fitted sheet 110 that lays over the sleeping portion of the crib mattress 140. In circular crib mattresses, the shape of the pocket 122 would be a half-circle encompassing the same portions of the circular crib mattress. In an irregular or otherwise shaped mattress, the shape of the pocket 122 would alter, but the proportions would generally remain unchanged.
The pocket 122 may include buttons 132 as shown in FIG. 1, sew-on snaps 134 as shown in FIG. 2, hook-and-loop strips 136 as shown in FIG. 3, an elastic strap 138 as shown in FIG. 4, or other elastic or attachment means, directly adjacent to the opening of the pocket 124 on the pocket sheet 122 and the fitted sheet 110 and are able to adjust the fit of the pocket opening 124 to the user. The attachment means allow the pocket opening 124 to be adjustable in tightness and size to accommodate easier entry as well as varying thicknesses of users.
Referring to FIGS. 6-10, generally, the figures depict a perspective view of the version of the sewn fitted sheet pocket 200 of the present invention fitted on an adult size mattress 240. The sewn fitted sheet pocket for an adult's bed 200 of the present invention comprises a fitted sheet 210, a sewn-on pocket sheet 220 that forms a pocket 222 with the fitted sheet 210, an attachment element 230 for adjusting the fit of the pocket opening 224, such as buttons 232, sew-on snaps 234, hook-and-loop strips 236, an elastic strap 238, or other attachment means, and straps 212 on the underside of the fitted sheet 210.
The fitted sheet 210 is of any such size and style to fit an adult mattress 240. The fitted sheet 210 itself may thus be the typical fitted sheet used for an adult mattress. As shown in FIG. 10, the fitted sheet 210 further includes at least one strap 212 placed across the mattress opening of fitted sheet 210 so that when the fitted sheet 210 is on the adult mattress 240, the strap 212 with buckle 214 prevents the fitted sheet 210 from untucking and falling off the adult mattress 240. Straps 212 are operationally attached so that in a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the straps 212 may be across the underside girth of the adult mattress 240 as shown in FIG. 10; but in an alternate version of the invention, the straps 212 may be placed across the corners of the adult mattress 240 from the tucked side of the fitted sheet 210 to the adjacent side of the fitted sheet 210. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the strap 212 includes a buckle 214 to allow for both easy securing and removal of the fitted sheet 210. The buckle 214 may be placed anywhere along the straps 212 that allows for ease of access.
Sewn or otherwise similarly attached by needle and thread to the fitted sheet 210 is a pocket sheet 220. The pocket sheet 220 may be a similar or differing fabric material or style from the fitted sheet 210. The pocket sheet 220 is a sheet sewn onto the fitted sheet 210 thereby forming a pocket 222 on the exposed side of fitted sheet 210 when the fitted sheet is correctly on the adult mattress 240. The exposed side of the fitted sheet 210 is the side of the sheet designed to be exposed when the fitted sheet 210 is correctly placed on the adult mattress 240. The pocket 222 is formed by sewing pocket sheet 220 so that the pocket opening 224 faces the head 242 of the adult mattress 240 and lays across the girth of the adult mattress 240, in the area one third to two-thirds of the adult mattress 240 up from the end of the adult mattress 240. This configuration is to allow the user of the sewn fitted sheet pocket 200 to be inserted into pocket 222 so that they are covered up to or between their armpit or waist area.
The pocket sheet is sewn into the portion of the fitted sheet 210 that rests on the top portion of adult mattress 240 when the fitted sheet is correctly placed on adult mattress 240 so that the edges of the pocket align with the side edges of adult mattress 240 and the lower end edges of the pocket align with the lower end edges of adult mattress 240, thus forming a quadrilateral encompassing the lower one-third to two-thirds of the portion of the fitted sheet 210 that lays over the sleeping portion of the adult mattress 240. In circular adult mattresses, the shape of the pocket 222 would be a half-circle encompassing the same portions of the circular adult mattress. In an irregular or otherwise shaped mattress, the shape of the pocket 222 would alter, but the proportions would generally remain unchanged.
The pocket 222 may include buttons 232 as shown in FIG. 6, sew-on snaps 234 as shown in FIG. 7, hook-and-loop strips 236 as shown in FIG. 8, an elastic strap 238 as shown in FIG. 9, or other elastic or attachment means, directly adjacent to the opening of the pocket 224 on the pocket sheet 222 and the fitted sheet 210 and are able to adjust the fit of the pocket opening 224 to the user. The attachment means allow the pocket opening 224 to be adjustable in tightness and size to accommodate easier entry as well as varying thicknesses of users.
In both crib mattress and adult mattress embodiments of the sewn fitted sheet pocket 100, 200, the pocket sheet is attached by sewing as shown by thread 126, 226. The thread 126, 226 or other sewing means may allow a pocket liner sheet to be added to add styling or padding for warmth or comfort. Although preferred embodiments of the present invention are for crib mattresses and adult-sized mattresses, the sewn fitted sheet pocket may be applied to any fitted sheet for any mattress for any user's age.
Many changes and modifications can be made in the sewn fitted sheet pocket according to the present invention without departing from the spirit thereof. I, therefore, pray that my rights to the present invention be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.

Claims

I claim:

1. A sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus for stabilizing sleep movement, the sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus comprising:

(i) a sewn fitted sheet for a mattress, having, in use, an exposed face, an inner face, and a mattress opening;

(ii) a pocket sheet sewn onto the outer face of said sewn fitted sheet, defining a pocket adapted to fit a user; and

(iii) at least one strap across the mattress opening of said sewn fitted sheet.

2. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a pair of attachment points at the entrance of said pocket, adapted to adjust the fit of said pocket.

3. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a pair of buttons on said sewn fitted sheet and a pair of corresponding button slits in said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

4. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a pair of sew-on snaps sewn on said sewn fitted sheet and a pair of corresponding button slits in said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket and a pair of corresponding sew-on snap receivers sewn on said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

5. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a pair of hook-and-loop straps on said sewn fitted sheet and a pair of corresponding hook-and-loop strap receivers sewn on said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

6. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a pair of elastic bands sewn on said sewn pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

7. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, wherein said pocket is large enough for two users when said sewn fitted sheet is for a mattress capable of supporting two users.

8. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, wherein said pocket is sized to fit at least one infant when said sewn fitted sheet is for a crib mattress.

9. The sewn fitted sheet pocket apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a second sheet sewn into said pocket as a lining.

10. A sewn fitted sheet pocket method for stabilizing sleep movement comprising:

(i) providing a sewn fitted sheet pocket comprising:

(a) a sewn fitted sheet for a mattress, having, in use, an exposed face, an inner face, and a mattress opening;

(b) a pocket sheet sewn onto the outer face of said sewn fitted sheet, defining a pocket adapted to fit a user; and

(c) at least one strap across the mattress opening of said sewn fitted sheet;

(ii) placing and strapping said sewn fitted sheet pocket onto a mattress with said pocket being on the exposed side of said sewn fitted sheet; and

(iii) placing a user into said pocket so that the user is placed lying on the back with said pocket covering user to a point between the waist and armpit portion, inclusively, of the user.

11. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where said sewn fitted sheet pocket further comprises a pair of attachment points at the entrance of said pocket, adapted to adjust the fit of said pocket.

12. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where said sewn fitted sheet pocket further comprises a pair of buttons on said sewn fitted sheet and a pair of corresponding button slits in said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

13. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where said sewn fitted sheet pocket further comprises a pair of sew-on snaps sewn on said sewn fitted sheet and a pair of corresponding button slits in said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket and a pair of corresponding sew-on snap receivers sewn on said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

14. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where said sewn fitted sheet pocket further comprises a pair of hook-and-loop straps on said sewn fitted sheet and a pair of corresponding hook-and-loop strap receivers sewn on said pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

15. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where said sewn fitted sheet pocket further comprises a pair of elastic bands sewn on said sewn pocket sheet at the entrance of said pocket.

16. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, wherein said pocket is large enough for two users when said sewn fitted sheet is for a mattress capable of supporting two users.

17. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, wherein said pocket is sized to fit at least one infant when said sewn fitted sheet is for a crib mattress.

18. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where said sewn fitted sheet pocket further comprises a second sheet sewn into said pocket as a lining.

19. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where the user inserted is an infant.

20. The sewn fitted sheet pocket method of claim 10, where the user inserted is an adult.
