Mattresses and cushions.-In a bed, cushion, or the like having inflatable or other tubular or rod-lihe resilient supporting-units inserted in alternate pockets in a covering between other pockets containing stuffing-material, the pockets are constituted by walls extending between the upper and lower layers of the covering and are of such a size that the resilient units normally produce lateral compression of the stuffing- material, so that if one of the units fails, the stuffing-material compressed thereby tends to flow and prevent the formation of a dead space. Fig. 5 shows a tick a subdivided by walls b so as to form cells to receive air tubes c and stuffing- material d. An outer tick e is separated from the tick a by a layer f of materials. The stuffing- material may be kapok, spongy or nitrated rubber, &c. Fig. 7 shows stuffing-material consisting of tufts of kapok interposed between twotwisted strands of crepe rubber, which are twisted together. The tubes c may be filled with resilient stuffing-material. For use as a life-saver on board ships, the mattress may be stiffened by longitudinal or transverse canes i. The tubes c may be attached at their ends to the tick a. A marginal tubing may extend all round the mattress.
