Be it known that I, SAMPsoN W-nlN- SHENK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the countyv of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Mattress; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a mattress, and more particularly a type of mattress which is especially adapted for use by military organizations and by campers and tourists.

The practice heretofore has been to either omit the mattress altogether and sleep on blankets on the ground, or to carry a sep" arate mattress when transportation facilities madev it possible. Disadvantages resulted from each of these arrangements in that when the mattress was omitted, the sleepers were obliged to undergo considerable discomfort, and when a separate mattress was carried the inconvenience of arranging covering thereon had to be contended with. It was also necessary to carry a separate pillow which often became separated from the rest of the bedding and which was inconvenient to pack.

The familiar type of sleeping bag has failed to overcome these disadvantages in that it is not readily accessible for cleaning and that it does not provide a. good cushion between the wearer and the ground.

It is an object, therefore, of this invention to provide a mattress which is adapted to be compactly folded and readily accessible for cleaning and which has pillow and covering portions permanently, associated therewith.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a mattress comprising inflated cushioning portions permanently joined together by flexible hinge sections and having flexible covering means secured thereon.

It is an important object of this invention to provide a mattress having pillow and cover sections hinged thereon.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.

As shown on the drawings:

The bottom or cushioning portion of the mattress of this invention may conveniently comprise connected sections 1, 2 and 3 and to said bottom portion is hinged ahead rest or pillow 4 by means of a flexible strip 5 wh ch is conveniently of the same material as the covering used for said sections 1, 2 and 3, and a covering portion 6, which is ordinarily made of greater width than the bottom or cushioning portion and which is hinged to said portion by the flexible portion 7. Said bottom sections 1, 2 and 3 and the pillow 4 are conveniently stuffed with a padding material 8, whichmay, if desired, be quilted therein and comprises any suitable padding material such as cotton felt, sea moss, etc. Padding material 8 may also be placed in the cover portion 6 and serves to add to the warmth alforded by said cover portion without materially increasing the total weight of the mattress.

It is of course-to be understood that. the bottom portion may be made continuous instead of in sections 1, 2 and 3, as shown, and that various methods of hinging the cover and pillow sections thereon may be employed.

As shown, it is also desirable to provide a reenforcing covering 9 for the under side of the bottom portion of the mattress, in order to prevent dampness from the ground from penetrating the mattress. This reenforcing covering 9 may, of course, be made of waterproof material if desired.

A mattress of the type shown in Figures 1 to 7 inclusive may conveniently be constructed with integral portions of covering material between which cushioning material 8 may be provided as desired, and the flexible hinged ortions 5 and 7 are formed by merely stitching together said top and bottom covering portions withoutany cushioning material therebetween.

The modified mattress of this invention,

which is shown in Figures 8 to 11 inclusive,

is designed to afford the advantages hereinbefore described, and is also adapted to be packed in avery small space which makes it particularly desirable for tourist use.

As shown in'Figures 8 and 10, the bottom of said modified form of mattress comprises inflatable sections 10, 11 and 12, to which an inflatable pillow is hinged by means of a flexible strip 14, and a cover section 15, which is ordinaril of greater width than the inflatable sections 10, 11 and 12, and

which is hinged thereon by flexible means 17.

Said cover section 15 'naay of course be quilted or padded or comprise suitable fabric as desired. Valves 16 are provided whereby air may be introduced into the sections 10, 11 and 12 and into the pillow 13 to inflate the same and whereby the air may be allowed to escape from said sections when it is desired to deflate them for packing. When this form of mattress is deflated it may, of course, be space, since the sections 10, 11 and 12 may be completely collapsed and the mattress folded as shown in Figure 11. I

Since the inflated portions of the mattress shown in Figures 8 to 11 inclusive are provided with means whereby the may be separately inflated, it is possib e for the user of the mattress to inflate these sections individually to the desired degree, an arrangement which adds materially to the comfort of the user.

As is apparent from the foregoing description, the mattress of this invention provides in reality a complete bed, which may be readily transported and all parts of acked in a very small -which are easily accessible for cleaning.

Troubles due to lost pillows'er blankets are avoided, and since the improved mattress need only be unrolled to have a complete bed in readiness, a considerable saving of time is effected.

Themattress of this invention is also desirable in permanent camps or other institutions where transient yisitors often arrive at late hours and have not provided themselves with blankets vor other covering.

I am aware that changes of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limitlng the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art. 1

I claim as my invention:

1. In a device of the class described, a mattress comprising several sections, hinge connections between said sections, the width of each hinge connection being less than half the thickness of the mattress, a pillow, a hinge connection between said pillow and the mattress, the width of said hinge connection being more than half the thickness of the mattress, a cover for the mattress, a hinge connection between the mattress and said cover, the width of said connection being greater than half the thickness of the mattress, a water-proof reinforcement secured to one face of the mattress and a reinforcement secured to that face of the cover which when the device is unfolded is on the same side as the reinforcement of the mattress,

the width of the cover being greater than the width of the mattress.

2. In a device of the class described, a mattress comprising several sections, hinged connections between said sections, the width of each hinge connection being less than half the thickness of the mattress, a pillow, a hinge connection between said pillow and the mattress, the width of said hinge connection being more than half the thickness of the mattress, a cover for the mattress, a hinge connection between the mattress and said cover, the width of said connection being greater than half the thickness of the mattress, the width of the cover being greater than the width of the mattress.
