Be it known that I, FRANKLIN F. BRAD- at hicago, in the county of Cook and the State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mattresses, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
1 My invention relates to mattresses and has a number of advantageous characteristics.
In accordance with one characteristic of my invention, the mattress is made of torso length anda piece of sheet material is connected with the mattress crosswise to be projectable beyond the foot end thereof along the mattress vto receive thele s of the occupant. This sheet portion is itself desirably made of foldable material, such as canvas and is preferably connected-with theA end of the foot thereof.
In accordance with another characteristic of'my invention, an additional sheet portion of foldable material is connected with the mattress, also crosswise, and pillow stung aistics of my invention is of especial use to campers, as, in addition to being readily compacted into small space for transportal'tion and. storage, it will readily adapt itself to irregularities in the ground and to the curvature of the occupants body.
The invention will be more fully explained in connection with the -accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a pers ective view of the mattress when folded; ig. 2 is a perspective view illustratingthe mattress unfolded; Fig. 3 is-a perspective view illustrating the mattress in use; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal view of a portlon of the mattress.
The mattress illustrated is formed of. assembled upright compressible coiled springs 1. -These springs are vdesirably arranged in two equal groups which are in hinged connection crosswise of the mattress at the midporton thereof near the mattress top where- Lnra citizen of the United States, residing s by one mattress section may be folded to lie upon the other to arrange the mattress for hlpment or storage. The coiled s rings are su ciently light to enable the folded mattress to be com acted into a small space, although the sprmgs are su'ciently strong to comfortably support the occupant when the mattress isunfolded. The two sections of the mattress are of a length to accommodate the torso of the sleeper, it being found unnecessary to /provide any spring su port for the sleepers legs below the hips. he mattress sections are preferably of box-like form, being enclosed within casings 2 of canvas or other suitable material, these casings being joined, as indicated at 3, crosswise of the mattress at the middle and top thereof so that one mattress section may readily be unfolded when the mattress is to be adjusted for use and may readily be folded when the mattress is toV be adjusted for shipment or storage. The form of hinge illustrated at 3 is preferred but other hinge formations may be employed.
While it is unnecessary to i rovide a spring` support for the legs of the s eeper, yet some measure of support is desirable, and to this end, I connect a piece of sheet material 4 exibly with the mattress to' project beyond the foot of the same lengthwise of the mattress, in adjusting Athe mattress for use, or which may be folded up when the mattress is folded. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the piece of sheet material4 is of foldable material, such as canvas, this piece of foldable material being preferably an integral part of a long sheet 5 which overlies the top side of the mattress and is sewed thereto around the border of the mattress, so that the sheet portion 4 becomes assembled with the mattress at the transverse edge of the foot-end thereof.
A second sheet portion 6 of foldable material is connected crosswise with the mattress at the head-end thereof and preferably at the head-end edge. The sheet portion 6 may be temporarily curled or folded about suitable pillow.A stuffing 7 when the mattress Ais unfoldedand adjusted for use. The sheet portion 6, similarly to the sheet portion 4, is desirably an integral continuation of the main sheet 5. When themattress is folded, the sheet portions 4 and 6 may be .disposed as illustrated in Fig. 1, whereafter the folded mattress may be com- 'Vpressed into a shallowbox convenient for` f transportation and storage.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A mattress in combination with a sheet portion made of foldable material connected crosswise therewith, and a pillow stutling at the head end of the mattress over which stuffing said sheet portion is folded to cornplete the formation of a pillow.
