IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Iatent No. 116,621, dated July 4, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES A. MORRIS, of Greenbush, in the countyot lztensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the followingl is a full, clear, and ex act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to inake and use the saine, reterence being had to the acconipanyingg,l drawing forming' part of this speciiication.

The object ot this invention is to provide siluple and eilicient nleans for fastening` doors on the inside, and which shall be a safeguard to travelers and others in rooms where locks are lacking` or out ot' order 5 and consists in a jointed plate with spurs for entering, the dooieasing, and with a head and thumb-screw `for securing the door, the whole constructed and arranged to operate as herehlaiter described.

A is the door 5 B, the fastener; l, the fusing' ofthe door. The lastener is niade in two parts connected by a hin ge or joint, I). E is the part which is placed between the door and the c: sin g, and is provided with spurs F which penetrate the casingl when the door is closed, as seen in Fig. 2. Gr is a shoulder, which acts as a stop when the fastener is applied. The part E extends out from the door and casing, and has a slot, H, near the hinge I). 1 is the other part ot' the fastener, which is turned against the door when the latter has been closed, as seen in Fig. 2. J is a thumb-screw in the part I, the thumbpiece K of which passes through the slot II a-nd is turned, when through the slot, like a button on the plate E, as indicated in'the drawing. As seen in Fig. 2, the door is fastened. rlhe head L is bearing against it, and the plate Eis secured to the casing by the spurs F and held there by the door itself. Should the crack between the door and the casing,r be too wide a wedge is used, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.

lhere locks are lacking` or defective, this article (which may be carried in the pocket) is a perfect sal'eguard, and especially valuable for travelers under all circumstances, as ordinary locks are, at best, but a poor protection to the lodg'er.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A door-fastening', forlned of two pieces, E I, clamped by a screw, J, hinged at I), slotted at H, and havingl spurs F, shoulder G, and head L thereon, when applied to a door and its casing, as specified.
