JAMES W. GAVIN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
DOOR-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1911.
Application filed October 10, 1910. Serial No. 586,167.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES V. GAVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door securers, and the objects of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and convenienceand efiiciency in use.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my door securer in use for securing a door. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same on an enlarged scale, the door and casing being in partbroken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line a" w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view, the door and casing being omitted. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 4. Fig. *6 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the same parts from the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 6, and with the moving member turned 90 degrees. Figs. 8 and 9 are side elevations of the main body frame and cover therefor before assembly.
A is the frame work of my emergency fastener and comprises two mating members respectively the main body frame B and the mating cover or closing in member C which combine to form a housing for the moving element D. The said moving element D comprises a fiat plate like structure and is provided with a main body having converging longitudinal edges 16 having teeth 17 and has at or near the apex of the angle formed by the said converging edges 16 an extension 18 constituting a journal at the extreme end and adjacent the larger end of the main body 15 is provided a neck 19 of relatively reduced width and constituting a second or main journal bearing. Remote from the said main body 15 relatively to the main bearing 19 the said moving member D is provided with a flat ring shaped formation as shown at 20 and which constitutes a combined handle and bottle opener suitable for opening bottles provided with crown stoppers, which latter are well known and ordinary, so that no description of the same is deemed necessary. The said main body frame B comprises a skeleton frame having side wall 21 suitable for inclosing the said main body 15 of the moving element D and arranged convergent generally parallel to the said converging edges 16 and teeth 17, and cross connected at the ends by bars providing bearings for the said journal bearings 18 and 19 of the moving element D, and the said side walls 21 are provided along their longitudinal edges with laterally directed flanges or ribs 22 which are parallel and form between them converging ways 23 which bottom on the body 24 of the said side walls 21, the said ways being suitable for receiving the turned edges 25 of the said mating cover member C. The cross bar 26 at the apex end of the said main body frame B is merely a straight bar. The cross bar 27 may be curvilinear in outline and is provided centrally with a bearing member 28 suitable for receiving the said main journal 19 of the moving element D. The said cover C is a skeleton structure having side walls or bars 29 provided with the said turned edges 25 suitable for being received in the said ways 23 as described and having end bars cross connecting the said side bars 29, the bar 30 at the apex end being as shown simply a straight bar corresponding to the mating bar 26 of the main body frame B and the cross bar 31 at the base end conforming generally to the cross bar 27 of the main body frame B and being provided centrally with a cap 32 suitable for cooperating with the said bearing member 28 on the said cross bar 27 so as to form a sleeve like bearing for the said main journal 19 of the moving .element D. Lugs 34 and 35 hold the parts B and C together.
My door securer comprising the said frame A made up of the two mating parts B and C and operatively housing the moving element D, and with the said moving element turned into a plane parallel with the plane of the combined frame elements, is adapted to be received in a crack between a window and a casing or as shown in a crack 33 between the edge of a door E and its casing F so as to secure them effectively against rattling, the wedge like character of the outline being suitable for obtaining such a result and with different dimensions for the cracks or openings. After being received in the crack 33 as described, turning the moving element D' operates to embed the said teeth 17 in the wood work of the door E and casing F and thereby serves to lock the door positively against being opened other than by violence, and when so turned, the said door securer 20 is supported in a manner so as to be suitable for use.
I claim as my invention 1. In an emergency fastener, a plate-like member provided With teeth, journals, and a handle and a housing, the said housing made up of two skeleton members engaged by their longitudinal edges by turned edges on one member and ways on the other member and the said skeleton members provided with means for being secured together.
2. In an emergency fastener, a fastening member suitable for being turned so as to engage and lock the edge of a door to the adjacent casing, and a housing therefor,
the said housing comprising a skeleton frame work made up oi two mating members which combined have a Wedgelike formation, and are provided with bearings suitable for operatively receiving the said fastening member, the said mating 'members engaged longitudinally by turned edges on one member and ways on the other member, the said turned edges and ways being convergent and cooperating to hold the said members together longitudinally when held in engaging position and the said mating members provided with means for being secured together.
