To all whom it may concern:

Bee/it lmoizvnfthatl, lanes A. Korean. a citizen of the United States, residing. at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of wliichthefollowing is a specification.

The invention relates. to brushes. of the type which. are adapted to be supplied with water "from a suitable source and which supply is controllable by means of a valve in the lengthof the hollow handle to which the brush is attached.

The invention consists of a brush of peculiar form and novel connecting means between such brush and handle whereby different shapes and sizes of brushes may be interchangeably fitted to the same handle.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.

' In the drawings hereto attached :Figure 1 is a side view of a brush embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, the dotted lines indicating a pole fitted to the handle to form an extension. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view on the line ww of Fig. 2 looking to the right as indicated by the arrows. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a modification. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the means, on a larger scale, for securing the brush to the cap.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.

v The handle 1 is hollow and is adapted to be coupled at oneend to a hose pipe 2, the

opposite end of the handle being provided with a cap 3 in the sides of which are formed bayonet slots 4. A valve 5 is located in the length of the handle to admit of controlling the flow of water therethrough.

The brush comprises a back 6, tufts 7 set therein, a cover 8, a metal band 9 encircling the back 6 and cover 8 and a raised portion 10 formed or otherwise provided centrally of the cover 8. The raised portion 10 is of like size in the various shapes and sizes of brushes provided for use with the same handle and has a packing ring 11 fitted to its outer edge to insure the formation of a close joint between the brush and cap 3. Studs 12 project from the edges of the raised portion -10.-,and are adapted to, cooperate with the slots 4 whereby. the brush is adaptedtobe secured: to, the. cap. by. means of a biliyunetv joint. Registering openings 13 are formed in the brush back 6, cover 8 and raised portion 10 and such openings admit of; Water passing. freely. from the cap 3. to the.v tufts 7 The supp'lyfof water may be regulated by means of the valve 5. When placing a brush in position it is arranged so that the studs 12 register with the open ends of the slots 4 after which the raised portion 10 is pressed into the cap and the brush is given a partial turn to cause the studs 12 to enter the inner or closed ends of the slots 4. The reverse of this movement admits of the brush being detached from the cap.

A brush constructed substantially in the manner set forth herein is admirably adapted for washing carriages, buggies, automobiles and like vehicles, since it supplies ample water and prevents injury to the paint and varnish. It is also understood that the brush may be utilized for any purpose where water is to be supplied simultaneously with the application of the brush to the surface to be washed. The construction is such as to admit of brushes being interchangeably fitted to the cap of the handle, the substitution being easily and quickly performed.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the brush has its face portion enlarged, the construction otherwise being substantially the same as illustrated in Fig. 3.

To avoid the necessity for constructing the handle 1 of an extreme length when it is desired to use a long handle, a clamp 14 is fitted to the handle 1 and is adapted to receive a pole 15, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The clamp 14 may be detachably fitted to the handle 1 so as not to be in the way when the pole 15 is not required.

To prevent loosening of the brush when fitted to the cap a catch 16 is provided and is attached to the cap 3 in such a position as to admit of the toothed portion of the catch extending along the approximately .horizontal portion of one of the bayonet which the invention appertains, andj while I have described the principle of operationof the invention, together with't'he-device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it un:
