JESSE LEE OUZTS, 0F SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA.
CHURN.
Application filed July 28, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn LEE Come, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Spartanburg county, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical sectional view showing the parts in position for churning; Fig. 2 a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 a similar view showing the supplemental cover in position for pouring water into the churn; Fig. i a sectional view on the line 4% of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a View similar to Fig. Q'with the dasher removed and the supplemental cover shifted to cover the openings in the main cover; and Fig. 6 a vertical sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
This invention has relation to the vertical dasher type of churn. The object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction thereof, especially with. regard to the closure means, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
The body a of the churn has its upper end formed into a cup-like receptacle Z), this receptacle being larger than the top end of the churn body a, so as to thereby form a downwardly facing shoulder a. Fastened under this shoulder in any suitable manner is a ring (Z to which is connected in any suitable manner a bail or handle 6 for use in conveniently carrying the churn about. Fitting over the top of the churn and within. the rim cup I) is a main cover-f provided with a central hole 9 for the passage of the dasher it, this dasher being of any suitable type, but preferably provided with a plurality of agitating devices 2 of any suitable construction. At one side of the dasher, the main cover is provided with a hole j and at the other side thereof it is provided with a pocket is having the same diameter as the hole but extending only part way through the cover. Lying upon the upper face of the main cover is a supplemental cover Z smaller in size than the main cover and being provided with a central opening for the passage of the dasher staff. At a suitable point, the supplemental cover is provided with an upward projection m which forms a finger hold by which the supplemental Specification of Letters Patent.

cover may be conveniently manipulated. Depending from the under face of the supplemental cover is a lug n rigidly affixed to or forming part of the supplemental cover, this lug n being dimensioned and positioned on the supplemental cover in such manner as to fit down into either the hole 7' or the pocket is. lVhile churning, the supplemental cover is adjusted so that lug n fits in hole j, thereby covering said hole and preventing the entrance of dust. When it is desired to pour hot or cold water into the churn, the supplemental cover is lifted by means of its finger hold m and turned or rotated on the staii until. lug n drops into pocket 70. In this position, the hole 0 in the supplemental cover will be coincident with the hole j in the main cover, thereby providing a convenient passage for pouring the desired quantity of water into the churn. To prevent dust or trash from falling into the material in the churn when not churning, as when the churn with milk in it is placed by the lire in winter for the milk to clabber 6., turn into the right state for churning), the dasher is removed and the supplemental cover is shifted laterally, as shown in Fig. 5, to cover the dasher hole in the main cover, the depending lug n being in engagement with the hole 7' and serving as a pivot. This is a very useful feature of my invention as it saves tying cloths around the top of the churn for the purpose of keeping out dust and trash.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim is:
In a churn, a churn body, a main lid or cover therefor provided with a central hole for the dasher, a water pouring hole at one side thereof, and also with a pocket at the other side of the dasher hole. and a supplemental cover smaller than the main cover and adapted to lie thereon and provided with a central hole for the dasher and also with a depending lug at one side of said hole and with another hole at the other side thereof, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature.
