An object of the .invention is the novel mailner of constructing and arranging the com- 1o ponent parts of the device so that the same may be effectively securedto a suitable receptacle and capable of being operated at the will of the operator for directing and controlling the flow of the liquid from the receptacle.
Another-object ofthe invention is the novel manner of shaping and connecting the spout tothe lid proper 'so as to not only materially reduce `the cost of manufacture, but to more efficiently direct the flow of the material passing through the spout. Besides the` above, my invention is distinguished in the construction of a device that may be used over and over again for controlling and directing the How-of a fluid while at $5 the same time keeping the latter in a sanitary condition at all times. lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will' be better understood from the following detailed descriptionl taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

For the purpose of accurately controlling the ow of sirup from the bucket and to keep, v the contents ofthe bucket in a sanitary condition at all times, I havevprovded a special design of delivery means vshown in this particular instance as a spout 4 having its lower end portion 5 and its upper end portion 6 flared soas to facilitate the travel of the fluid into and out of the spout, and for thepurpose of-accurately directing the discharge of the iiuid the spout is provided with a lip 7. The lowerared end 5 is passed through ,an opening 8 in the lid and then flanged as indicated at 9 sothat the spout may be effectively secured to the lid and thus the spout and lid are connected together as a unit so as to be readily forced into engagement with one or more buckets, thereby enabling my improved lid structure to be used over and over again.`
A closure 10 is provided of the proper area to completely cover the spout and also the lip 7 and this closure is secured to the spout by Y hinge connection 11 and is manipulated by a finger piece 12 Iformed as a continuation of the body portion of the closure. A coil spring 13 is secured to the connection 11 and has its ends 14 and 15 abutting respectively the spout and the finger piece 12 so that the resiliency thereof may be utilized to hold theH In the use of this structure it is only necessary to force the lid into the top portion of tecting the contents of the bucket against con- 10 tamination lby the outside atmosphere' or forei matter. i
It 1s, of course, to be understood thatv the lid proper may be constructed in various other manners than illustrated and connected to the bucket or other receptacle in various ways, and besides the spout may be designed in various other manners and secured to they `11d 1n various other ways, and therefore, I
do not desire to be limited in protection in any manner whatsoever except as Set forth in the following claim.
What -I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a closure for a sirup can comprising a lid having' a circumferential smooth portlon adapted to frictionally fit the opening in .a standard sirup can, a spout having its upper and lower ends flared to facilitate the gripping thereof between the thumb and first finger for the purpose of removing the lid from a can and provided at its upper end with'a pouring lip and having its lower end extending through the lid, a flange extending outwardly from the lower end of the spout and secured to the lower side of the lid, and a cover for the upper en d of the spout.
