To all whom t may Concern.' p
Be it known that I, FRANK E. HOUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winthrop, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Covers, of whichp the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved cover for account books, designed to grasp the bound edge or back of the book in such fashion that the cover may easily be applied or disengaged from the book proper and also so that the sides of the cover may be supported in a desired position, so that the leaves, when the book is in use, will be flat, lor approximately so.
ln the drawings: Figure l shows a plan view of the preferred form of my cover; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the cover shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is an end view showing the cover and book combined, the engaging parts of the cover and book being in section; Fig. Ll is a section on line -ll: of Fig. 1.
As is well-known account books, which often continue in use for years, compel a construction of a strength and permanence proportional to the hard and long continuous service they may be called upon to withstand. For this reason the paper and sewing of the book proper is of the stoutest, while the cover itself is heavy and solid andsolidly secured to the bound edge of the leaves. The result is a massive and bulky book, occupying in the safe in which it is keptywhen not in use, a considerable space and heavy to handle when in use.
My new cover is especially7 useful in connection with books bound in accordance with United States Letters Patent No. 1,083.539, dated January 6, 1914, and is de signed to receive a book carrying a light iieXible cover, as shown therein; and to give such a book the necessary support when in use on the desk.
My cover is formed in three parts, namely, the center piece, A, formed of a strip of thin sheet metal or other suitable material, bent into a rectangular shape of suitable size to receive the bound edge or back of the book proper, which, when it is inserted, makes a tight fit. One side of the frame A is closed by a covering piece, a, of wood or other suitable material, secured to the frame or center piece A.. To the edges of the sides of the center piece are hinged two sides B and C which are preferably also of thin sheet metal. These sides are of a length and breadth suitable to cover the sides of the book which the cover is designed to receive and the edges of the metal on the sides corresponding to the top and bottom of the book are preferably turned over to form a narrow flange, 7), for a purpose to be hereinafter indicated. Ourthe edge of these sides which corresponds with the front of the book one or more projectlng lips, c. may be formed, perforated as shown, with which a suitable lock, such, for example, as is shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,127,004-, dated February 2, 1915, may be engaged. To the outside of the sides B and C is secured a light box D of wood, fiber-board, card-board or the like, preferably open on the side to which the covers B and C are applied and pref* erably stiifened and supported by crossmembers, d', one edge of which rests upon the bottom Z2 of the box D and the other edges of which are flush with the upper edges of the sides and ends, (l. of the box D, forming in combination with the sides B and C a multiplicity of closed cells.
The boX D may be secured to the flanges,l b, or otherwise secured to the sides B and C.. When so secured a cloth or leather covering is applied to cover the outer surfaces of the sides and center piece, for purposes of finish. i
Such a cover as have described is strong, stiff and of insulating character. If desired it may be detached from the bock proper when the book is to be stored in the safe or it may be allowed to remain and will then provide a cover having a dead air space of heat insulating character. When inl use on the desk it forms a cradle for the book proper permitting its bound edge or back. to drop below the levely of the leaves, so that the latter lie flat or approximately7 so. One cover may be used upon the desk to carry in turn several different books and the eX- pense of duplicating covers may thus be avoided.
1. The cover above described, made up,
Ain combination, of a frame or center piece to receive the bound edge of the book and hollow sides hinged to the edges of the frame or center piece, said sides being made in combination, of a frame or center piece substantially as thick as the center piece so tions applied to the outer side of the me- L0 as to rest flatwise on a table or the like when tallic sides to supportzand protect the same. the Cover is open. Signed by me at Boston, Massachusetts,
2.` The cover above described, made. up, this 31st day of March, 1915. to receive the bound edge of the book, sheet FRANK E HOUSH metallic sides hinged to the edges of said center piece and a, hollow member divided into a multiplicity of cells by interior parti- Witnesses: K Y
