RUBIN BASS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VELVET-PRESSER.

Application filed March 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUBIN Bass, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Velvet-Pressers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices adapted to be used for pressing velvet or similar pile fabric and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated upon which plain pieces of velvet may be placed for the purpose of pressing the same.
Another object of the invention is to so connect the parts of the device that they may be readily used for pressing pieces of velvet which are double faced, or folded as for instance the edge of a velvet coat which has a facing of velvet on the inner side.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a device of the character indicated means for folding the parts thereof in order that the device may be conveniently used for pressing a velvet cuff without necessitating the removal of the cuff from a garment, or disconnecting the ends of the cuff from each other.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the character indicated features which render the device to all intent and purpose fire-proof consequently bringing the same within strict fire regula tions in vogue and also avoiding the possibility of the device being scorched or damaged by the application of a hot iron.
With the above and other objects in view the device includes a body portion of especial structure having spaced bristles arranged thereon. A section is hingedly con nected with the said body portion, but may be readily detached therefrom, and the said section is provided with spaced bristles and a backing of woven wire, to which the iron may be applied during the pressing operation.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a plan view of the device showing parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of adjacent edge portions of the body and section of the device.
The pressing device comprises a body 1 and a section 2 which is hingedly connected with the said body in a manner hereinafter explained. The body 1 consists of four plies Specification of Letters Patent.

of material 3 assembled in close contact with beyond the outer surface of one of the outer plies of material 3 and the velvet is placed against the pointed ends of the bristles. 4 when it is subjected to the pressing operation. A sheet metal backing 5 is applied to the plies of material 3 and the edge portion ofthe backing 5 is curved around the edges of the plies of material 3 and is extended in a flange 6, which lies against the surface of the uppermost ply of material 3 and serves as means for holding the plies of material in position against the body portion of the backing. The body 1 may be of any suitable shape in plan view, the form illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing being merely illustrative.
The section 2 is composed of two plies of pliable material 7 having spaced bristles 8 mounted thereon. A backing 9 of woven wire. material extends along the outer surface of one of the plies 7 and is continued around the edges of both of said plies and along the edge portion of the other ply 7 as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Flexible metal strips 10 are applied to the backing 9 at the edge portions of the plies 7 and at the opposite sides of the plies and the strips 10 at the opposite sides of the plies are suitably secured together by means of rivets 11 or other securing devices. Hooks 12 are linked throughthe edge portion of the body 1 and the edge of the body 2 and the said hooks are substantially elliptical in side elevation.
hen it is desired to press plane pieces of velvet the section 2 may be disconnected from the hooks 12 and the body 1 or the section 2 may be used for pressing the velvet. When it is desired to use the device for press ing double faced velvet the section 2 is connected with the hooks 12 and the body 1 is placed upon a flatsurface. The material to be pressed is then placed upon the ends of the bristles 4: and the section 2 is folded over the body 1 so that the bristles 8 come in contact with the material to be pressed. A hot iron is then passed over the backing 9 and thus the material held between the body 1 and section 2 is pressed. V hen it is adjacent each other. The saidbody 1 and" section 2 are then inserted in the cuff and a hot iron is applied to the outermost side of the cuff thus efl'ecting the pressingoperation.
vFrom the above description taken in conjunction With the accompanying drawing it will be seen'that a device of simple structureis provided and that the device may be manipulated to enable its convenient use fori presslng pile fabric which 18 in plane strips or which 18 sewed or formed up in cuffs and the like or'whi'ch is provided with prising members hingedly connected together and foldable one upon the other, said members being provided with spaced bristles.
2. A device for pressing pile fabric comprising members hingedly connected together and detachable one from the other said member being provided With spaced bristles.
3. A device for pressing pile fabric comprising members having spaced bristles, and hooks pivotally connecting the members together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
