L. MILLER GARMENT Filed Nov. 14 1923 INVE NTOR XMW ATTORNEY erally heretofore proposed.
Patented Sept. 30, 19 24. I
UNITED STATES F 1,509,973 PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS Km, 01? BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
onnmmwr.
Application fled November 14 .1923. Serial No. 674,616.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS MILLER, a
citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and btate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of
which the following is a full, clear, and
It is a further object of the invention to provide a diaper the parts of which may be manipulated to furnish an article adaptable to various conditions.
- jects of the A still further object resides in the construction of a garment of the nature described which may be applied to the body without necessarily using retainingmeans such as, for example, safety pins, etc, aside from the fact that in such application, the
garment may be readily manipulated andv caused to conform to the contour of the parts.
An additional object is that of providing a garment which will eflicientl rform the purposes for which it is intentlbtlhnd which will also be economically and readily manufactured. I
Other objects ofthe invention will in art be obvious and will .in part appear ereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises a garment possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fi re 1 is a face view of a stri and associated parts, by means of which t e obpresent invention may be accom lished, 1
Fig. 2 shows the strip folded upon itself ,fgprovide a pad,
'Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 shows the second ing operation, and
Fig. 5 illustrates the article as applied to the body.
stage of the fold Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen in the present embodiment of the invention that there has been illustrated a strip 10, which may be made of any suitable material and which is of rectangular shape, its length being materially greater than its width.
In its preferred form the garment comprises a ong rectangular sheet of flexible washable material, which is preferably without padding and may be designated as single ply material, adapted 'to be folded to form a pad comprising three superposed panels 12, 13 and 14, for use, .and to-be unfolded again for purposes of cleaning and drying.
This pad has attached thereto cords or tapes 11 at opposite sides of one edge and oop or keeper 15 at the center of the opposite edge. In use the pad is folded parallel to the edges mentioned, between the limbs and one cord is run through the loop. The'reupon by drawing up the cord the edges are drawn tightly around the trunk and the cooperation of the cord and keeper,
retalns the garment in place by limiting the movement ofthe edge, lateral .to itself. -In such application, attention being invited, to Fig. 5, one section of the pad covers the body from the abdomen downwardly and the free side edges thereof extend around the limbs towards the upper part of the body, and slightly around the trunk. Similarly, the second section of the pad extends from the small of the back downwardly and the side edges of this section also partially encircle the limbs so that to gether with the side edges of the first section, garment legs are formed. Due to the pull exerted upon the second section by means of the belt, it will'be appreciated that the side edges of this section, adjacent their upper ends, are also caused to extend around the body and in so doing, they overlap the side edges of the first section adjacent the upperends of the latter, whereby a complete garment is formed, and it is obvious that by means of the belt, the free edges of the pad may be drawn snugly to embrace the body so that accidental displacement of It will be understood that a garment of this nature offers a great number of advantages among which is to be numbered the fact that by forming the same of one preferably rectangular strip of material, which is not sewn or otherwise provided witlrpermanent pockets, the garment may be opened up so that it may readily be washed and ironed, it being also noted that during the drying of such garment, the same occupies less space upon the dryer than would be occupied by an ordinary diaper in which the length of all edges is substantially equal.
Also, by virtue of the construction herewith suggested, the strip may be folded in numerous different manners in order to provide a pad of any desirable thickness, aside from the fact that by utilizing a member such .as the belt herewith illustrated, the necessity for employing retaining means such as safety pins, is obviated.
Furthermore, due to the belt, the parts of the garment may be moved into that relationship which is most desirable for the proper application of the garment to the parts of the bodyand also, due to the double loop furnished, it is obvious that garments formed of strips of equal size are adaptable to the bodies of infants of diiferent sizes.
Thus, among others, the objects predicated to this invention are accomplished, and it will be seen that sincecertain changes may be made in the garment and different embodiments of the invention could be-made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the followclaims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of .the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A diaper comprising a flexible washable single ply sheet folded to provide a substantially rectangular multiple ply pad, adapted to be folded to embrace the thighs, the outer face of said pad having cords at opposite sides adjacent one edge and a cord keeper adjacent the opposite edge intermediate the sides thereof said cords being adapted to cooperate with each other to fold said first mentioned edge around the trunk and to cooperate with said keeper to retain said second mentioned edge in place.
2. A diaper comprising a flexible washable single ply sheet folded to provide a substantially rectangular multiple ply pad, the outer face of said pad having cords at opposite sides adjacent one edge adapted to cooperate with each other to fold the pad and draw toward each other the portions of the pad to which the cords are attached, and a cord keeper intermediate said sides. adjacent the opposite edge of said pad, adapted to be engaged by the cordand limit the lateral position of the engaged part of the cord in respect to the adjacent edge of the pad intermediate said sides.
In testimony whereof lt afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
