rnnssunn DEVICE.
Application filed November Our invention relates to pressing devices and especially to devices: of that type which are employed for imparting or restoring a smooth and even surface to woven fabrics.
5 The-object of our invention is to provide a device of simple and durable constructionhave ing suitable. clamping and pressure-{applying means so as to constitute a device which is easyand eflicient of operation inits employ-1 ment for the purpose of pressing wearing apparel such asneckties or the like that may be operated without hazardtothe coloring elements of the apparel, and that may be operated without the necessity'of a supply of steam or similar heating elements.
In the present practice of pressing certain articles of wearing apparel such as neckties, a device employing heat is used, wherebythe heat is applied together with pressure for the purpose of restoring the articles to their original flat and shapely appearance. Such articles are usually provided with colorful designs printed or woven into the same and produced by coloring matter'having chemical j properties. The colors are subject to diffusion by the application of intense heat-and. by the application of heated moisture or moisture in association with. heat. It is ap parent, therefore, that .the'employment of ferred forms of which are illustrated in the g accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device as when in use.

Fig. 7 is a detail clampinglever. r v Referring in detail to the drawings 1 designates a necktie such as ,commonl used,'having the longitudinal opening or channel 2 between the layers of material of the'tieand extendingthe length 'ofthe tie. A thin strip-like element3 is provided prefverably of metal and constitutingia tongue l having thesame general tapering shape as a perspective view of, the
necktie, the tongue 3 comprising taperin sections 4 and 5, the two sections beingjoine by a hinge joint which is thin'and of leather I or other flexible material. The hinge .6 is riveted to the tapering sections 4 and5 of which the tongue iscomposedin such-a way, that the tongue is adapted for folding upon signed for insertion into the channel or opening 2 of the necktie,,and for extension therei in until they advancing extremity. of the tongue reaches a point substantially midway; of the length of the necktie channel, whereby I the necktie that areexposed and wrinkled inthe wearing of thesame. The tongue so pothe said tongue isposition ediin the parts of sitioned, its planes respectivelyparallel with the corresponding planes, of the necktie, serves to holdthe tieinfa desired, shape itself when notinuse. The tongue is de -I preparatory was application to a pressing v device 7. I I H I The pressing device 7 consists of the upper and lower pressure plates 8 and 9, which are tapere d'so as to conform tothe shape of atie and areof such length that the pair of plates are adapted to cover that said-portion of the tie which is subjected to wrinkling when in use. ,The' inner. surfaces of .Y'Eh pressure. plates are lined with a soft absorbent material such as the felt 10 sothat the plates 7 may be tightly and yieldinglyclamped toether.
. Feet 11 of soft material such as rubber are secured to the bottom side and at thecorners vice may be placed upon a finished wood surof'the lower pressure plate 9 so that the deface, as that of a dresser without scratching or otherwise marring such surface.
A U-shaped clamp 12 is'secured to them,
lower pressure plate 9 by means ofthe screws clamp lever pivot plate 15 by means of the ears 16 with which said plate 15 is provided. Upstanding lugs 17 are providedon the pivot plate 15 and are spaced so as to receive the 13, and has inturned hooks 14 to engage a cam-like hub portion 18 of the clamp lever 19 which is mounted for pivotalmovelnent on the pivot pin 20 retained bysaid lugs.v The hub portion 18 of the clamp lever is provided with an ofiset aperture 21, by reason ofwhich the clamp lever is eocentrically pivoted by the'pin on the lugs and in relation to the lower pressure plate. An opening 22 is pro- .vided in the clamp lever pivot plate '15,
Wherethrough the eccentrically pivoted hub portion 18 of the clamp lever 19 is permitted to project into contact with the upper face of lower pressure plate 9. 7
Assuming the device to be constructed and assembled as described, its operation is as follows In order to insert an'a-rticle in the device for pressing, the clamping lever '19 is moved to-the position as shown in dotted lines-in Fig. 4, thereby releasing the pressure fromthe plate 8 in its contact with the lower plate 7 9 and also releasing the upward pressure of thepivot plate 15 in its contact-with the inturnedhooks 14 ofthe U-shaped member 12. The clamping device (Fig; 2) is then removed and'thepressure plate 8'withdrawn.
' A tie or like article isthen placed on the felt surface of the, plate 10, andthe plate 8 and the clampingdevicearereplaced in operative position. The lever 19 is moved from the position as shown in the dotted lines in Fig.
' 4 to that shown in'full lines causing the eccentricallylpivoted' hub 18 to engage the upper surface of the plate 9,,pressii 1g same downwardly and thus exerting pressure on the article positioned between the plates. By-
having the plates lined with a soft absorbent, material such as felt, the article which is placed in the device in a dampened condition surface whereby an ironing out and smooth- I sur ing efl'ect is secured on a, wrinkled. area of relatively thin material subjected to the operation, of the device. 7
Whatwe claim and, desire to secure, byLetters Patentis:
V 1. In a necktie pressing device, mated upper and lower pressing boards, a clamp fixed to the lower board and having clamping ears, a clamp lever plate having eXteIlsionsfor movable engagement with the ears of the clamp, a lever arm eccentrically mounted onv the clamp. lever plate, the plate having an" opening, the lever arm havingta portion-projecting throughsaid opening to bear against the upper board and press one boa-rd againstthe other on operation of the clamp lever, and a hinged strap adapted to promote the smooth shape the necktie andv pressing-thereof.
2. Ina clamping: device for mated upper and lower pressing boards, an apertured clamp; lever plate, a..clamp attached'toxthe lower board and having clamping ears for receiving the'plate when the plate is elevated by a lever, and a clamp lever" eccentrioally mounted onsaid plate, and having aportion movable through the aperture of the lever plate for urging the upperboard towards the.- lower board against the resistance of the;
clamp.
3. In a clamping device'for mated uppen and lower pressing boards, a clamp attached to the lower board, and having clamping ears, a movable clamp leverplate having extensions adaptedfor positioning for engagement with the ears of the clamp. upon positioning of the plate on the upper board, a
lever arm pivotallymounted on the. clamping plate having-acam member, the plate hELV,
ing an opening, the lever being adapted. to
project the cam member through said open ing to press one board against the otheron operation of the lever arm. 1
In testimony whereof'we affi-x our signatures. l
