Specification of Letters Patent.
`Patented oct. i2, 1915i.
A application fiiefiiiiarch 24,1915.. seria1No.1e,5e5.
To all whom it may concern;
Beit known that LlFRANK W. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Cuff-Links,`of which the following Fig. 6- shows a portion ofthe doubled This invention relates to cuff links orvfasf is a specification.
teneis and has for its object to provide a yoke member of. resilient material folded to embrace the outside of the cuff, the yoke ends inwardly and back over nearly upon themselves, whereby Vthe button heads extend inward toward each other and the riveted ends are covered by the fold. A further object of the invention is to eX- tend these button heads or vengaging members inwardly nearly inV contact with each other, whereby the yoke ar'insY are caused. to spring apart to permit the cuff fabric to pass therebetween, in positioning the holder on the cuff by which construction it-is impossible for the holder to become inadvertently disengaged from the cuff even when the cuff is made of soft or unstarclied material suchV as silk or the like.
Another feature of this invention is the- 1 holderappliedv to a cuff. F ig. 2- -is a perspective view showing the strip of metal from which my vimproved yoke member is formed, also showing the openings punched therein for the recept-ion of the lugs on the button shank to be riveted therein. Fig.- 3-
Yillustrates one of the `button or button-hole engaging members showingthe lugs on the shank portion adapted to be riveted tothe is a side view of the finished yoke showing the same as being in substantially the form o f the letter W vwith the ends of its extending side arms folded inwardly-upon themselves.
fabric of a folded cuff in section with my improved holder attached thereto.
My improved yokev member is preferably constructed` from afstrip of resilient or spring stock, usually from the preciousV metals or from metals plated with the same.v This strip may be'cut in any desired ornamental form, but I have illust-rated the same as 'of the plainest design.v 'This strip is folded into substantially the shape ofthe letter N the side arms 15 and 16 being set 0n a slight angle to each other, and the middle` portion 10 atjthe bendjis folded inwardly a short distance forming pockets or grooves i 11 and 12 on either side into which the front edges of the cuff extend and'by which these edges are retained firmly in spaced apart relation. rIhe elongated side arms of the yoke are arranged to extend along and embrace the `outsidep'ortions of the cud, and inthe end portions 17 and 18 of these side armsare formed eyes 19 intowhich the lugs v2 0 of the button shank. 21 'areset and riveted. Ther outer endjof this shank may be formed into lany desired shapebut the vordinary button or bean head is hereinshown. (The end portions of these side arms are folded inwardly and back upon themselves, thereby Coin-` y i p letely covering or hiding from view .the-v riveted or swaged ends of the button' shank lugs. By this construction Vof folding the end sbackward upon themselves a number of advantages are gained; first, a button isA y adaptedto bel riveted into place `and the riveted portions neatly' hidden from view,fl
otherwise I would be Vobliged to connect the buttonsto the'arms by soldering vand asis,v well known in theart the application of heat necessary for .soldering toplated ymetal ini juresthe plate andthe heat also removes the4 temper from the `spring stock.
Another feature of my improved cuff is that the button portions extend inwardly l toward each other to nearly vmeet, whereby it is necessary to springthese members apart slightly in order to pass thefabric of theV cuff between them'inpositioning the yokel on. the cuff and byl thisconstruction, it willv shape.
H55 Sai f extend along and embrace the opposite outside portions of the cuff, the ends of said Y Copies of this patent may be obtained for in presence of two arms being folded'back upon themselyes, and
`button-hole engaging members fixed to said inturned ends and extending inward toward each other, the inner ends of said members nearly contacting, wherebyvthe yoke arms are caused to spring apart to permit the cul fabric to pass between in positioning said vyoke on the cu'.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature witnesses. Y FRANK W. YOUNG. Witnesses:
HOWARD E. BARBER, A. RWMACREADY.
