SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,677, dated March 22. 1887.

.To all whom, t may concern:

Beit known that I, WILLIAM G. Horitins, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons or Studs; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description thereof.

This invention relates to a button or stud having a shoe composed of two arms or parts, which are pivoted to the post and are arranged to be brought into a position parallel with the head of the article to hold the same in place, and are also capable of being turned into a position at right angles to the head, that the button or stud may be conveniently applied and removed.

The improvement consists in certain features of construction and arrangement,herein- In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 represent side views of the button at right angles to each other, with the shoe parts in their two positions. Fig. 3 represents a rear view of the but-ton. Figs. 4 and 5 show vertical sections on lines c :n and y y, respectively. Fig. 6 shows a top View of the button with the front removed. A is the bnttoirhead, which may be of any desired form or style. B is the post, which is made hollow, and is provided at its free end with ears b b', to and between which the two shoe-arms C C are pivoted side by side by a pin, D, passing through said ears and through blocks c c,secured to or integral with the arms C C', respectively. The post is secured to the back plate, A', of the button-head in any desired manner, but is preferably inserted in a hole, c', in the plate, (which hole is of a size to fit the post end,) and is soldered to the plate, thereby making its attachment more secure. Located in the hollow post and extending longitudinally of the same is a pin, E, which bears against the blocks c c at one end and against a spring, f, at the other.

To remove the button, the arms are turned from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that in Fig. 2, when the button may be readily detached.

vWhat I claim, and desire to secure ny Letters Patent, is-

1. In a button or stud, the combination, with the head, of a hollow post, B, secured thereto, the shoear1ns C C', pivoted side by side to the free end of said post and having dat faces 2 3 at right angles to each other, the pin E, located in the hollow post and engaging the shoe-arms, as described, and a spring located and concealed in the head and bearing upon said pin, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the head, of a hollow post, I3, secured thereto and having ears b b, the shoe-arms C C', pivoted side by side to said` ears and having blocks c c', provided with fiat faces 2 3, the pin E, located in said post and engaging the blocks c c', a plate, F, having a spring-tongue, f, bearing upon the pin, and a cover, G, secured to the head and holding the plate F in place, substantially as set forth.
