COLLARS.
Patented May 21, 1907.
A wi-f'ifiiii file September 12,1906. Serial N0- 334,343.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JOHN DARLING LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented new and usefuLImprovements in Fastening Devices for Ladies Collars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices, designed especially for connecting the meet ing ends of ladies stock or ribbon collars, and has for its objects to produce a simple, inexpensive device of this character whereby the ends of the collar will be securely but detachably united, one which in practice will attach the collar properly to the neckband of the waist or other garment and prevent upward riding of the collar, and one which will yield readily to the movements of the neck and at the same time prevent the collar from breaking down.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an inner face view of a portion of a collar showing the meeting ends thereof connected by a fastening device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the ends of the collar disconnected. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a collar of usual form comprising a strip or band of ribbon or other suitable material and having its meeting ends provided with termi nal hems or folds 2 formed and stitched in the ordinary manner. For uniting the ends of the collar I employ a fastening or coupling member 3 composed of celluloid or analogous semi-flexible material and preferably in the form of a plate of the shape shown having adjacent its ends openings 4 each provided with a pair of oppositely extended slots 5 and provided between its ends with an opening 6 adapted for engagement with a collar button, said opening being of keyhole form presenting a slot 7 for engagement with the shank of the button.
Carried by the ends of the collar 1 at points is a pair of coupling members 8 in the form of stud bars each composed of a double strand of wire twisted into form, as shown, and provided with attaching members or hooks 9 adapted for engagement with the hems 2 and preferably formed by suitably bending and sharpening portions of one strand of the wire, there I being also formed on each of the bars and by appropriately coiling the terminals of the other strand of wire a pair of engaging heads or studs 10 adapted for entrance through the openings 4 and having shank portions 11 which seat within the slots 5. i In practice, the stud carrying bars 8 are I engaged with the ends of the collar in the l manner heretofore explained by entering the l fastening members 9 through the inner folds i or hems 2, it being observed in this connection that the bars are. thus detachably engaged with the collar and that the fastening hooks 9 are properly concealed from view. After the bars have been applied in position the coupling member 3 is engaged with the studs 10 of one of the bars, as seen in Fig. 2, by entering the head portions of the studs through the openings 4 and seating the shanks 11 thereof into the adjacent slots 5, after which the studs on the other bar are e11- tered through the openings 4 and finally seated in the appropriate slots 5 thus to detachably unite the ends of the collar, as seen in Fig. 1. After connecting the ends of the collar as explained, the member 6 is attached to the shirtwaist or other garment by enter- I ing the head of the collar button through the l opening 6 and finally seating the shank of the I button in the slot 7. It is apparent that under this arrangement the collar will be securely but detachably engaged with the l garment and will be prevented from riding upward on the neck of the wearer, and furthermore, that owing to the member 3 being composed of semi-flexible material the collar will be prevented from breaking down, while at the same time the member may yield to facilitate free movement of the head of the wearer.
' Having thus described my invention, what I I claim is:
y 1. In a device of the class described, a collar, coupling members attached thereto and provided with engaging portions or studs ble material and having openings to receive Id and a second couplmg member havlng opensa1d studs.
ings to receive said studs and provided be- In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature tween its ends With an opening for engagein presence of tWo Witnesses. ment With the collar button.
2. In a device of the class described, a col- N DARLING I lar, coupling members engaged therewith l Witnesses: and havmg engaging portions or studs and a W. A. PATTON,
second coupling member composed of fleXi- LEON LEVY.
