Be it known that I, Janus F. SHANNON, a citizen of the United States, residingT at Farmville, in the county of Prince Edward and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain-Bags, of 'which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to sacks or bags, such as grain bags or the like.

The object of my invention is to provide a construction of bag which will prevent the same being 4entered and the contents thereof attacked by rats, mice or other rodents.

The invention resides in the construction of metal sack or bag hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of la sack made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is av cross sectional view illustrating the sack and a contained smaller cloth sack. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary side view illustrating the locking means. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the locking members. Fig. 5 is a detail perspecti ve view'of one of the locking members, and Fig. 6 is a detail cross sectional view on. the line 6--6 of Fig. l.

Referring to the drawings l designates a flexible metal sack of any suitable construction, which may be braced or reinforced in any desired manner. The sack is preferably 'made of open mesh material of rsuch size as to permit large grain such as corn to be contained directly therein and against escape. In the case of small grain or flour, a sack 2 containing the small grain or flour is placed Within the sack l as shown in Fig. 2. At the sack opening on 'oppositeedges are secured cross fastening bars or the like '3 and 4. Said bars may be secured in any suitable manner to the sack proper as by means of the rivets 5. Said bars may be made of any suitable metal desired, and as made by me at the present time, comprise a construction suitably made up of tin, but of course, it is obvious that the barsA may be made of any suitable material such as other metal or even Wood. A bent over Harige 6 is provided at the upper edge of the bar 4 to extend over theupperedge of the bar 3 so as to more effectively prevent the escape of the contents of the bag.

In order to effect the closing ofthe bag, the keys 7 are turned to a position as sho-wn in Figs. l and 6 so that the heads 9 may be readily passed through the openings 10 of the bar 4. After passage through the openings 10, the keys 7 are turned so that their heads 9 will extend transversely of the openings 1,0 vand effect the locking or positive closing of the bag. When the parts are in this position, the additional locking means comprising the lock 12r may engage the staple 11.

My invention provides a construction of bag, namely, a metal construction. which will not be gnawed by rats. mice or other rodents to effect entrance to the cont-ents of the bag. By using the bag embodying my invention, the same may be left in a cellar or other place infested by rodents without any danger of their gaining access to the contents of the bag.

It is clear that changes within the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope. of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what claim is:

l. The combination with a sack to inclose and protect a commodity against attack by rodents comprising a flexible metallic mesh container body being positively closed by a portion of itself at one end to prevent attack by rodents at said end, said metallic body having an insert opening at the second end. of means to positively close the bag at said opening to prevent the entrance of rodents thereat comprising bars. one bar being fastened on each of opposite sides of the body to the body at thel insert opening, one of said bars being provided with a flange to overlap the other bar for the purpose specified, and means positively fastening said bars against relative movement.

2. rThe combination with a sack to inclose and protect a commodity against the attack of rodents, comprising a flexible, metallic thereatcomprising independent alined bars,

one of said bars fastenedv to said bag adjacent to each ofvsaid edges, said bars extending above said edges, said bars being of similar length, the upper longitudinal edge of one of said bars being perforated to overlap the corresponding edge ofthe other of 15' said bars, and common means for securing said bars together.
