Be it known that I, OSCAR G. COLLIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairbury, in the county of Jefferson and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in sectional Acases or boxes composed of a plurality of superposed sections, or compartments, each of which is adapted to contain a .carton for eggs or other commodities, and the invention resides particularly in an improved construction of hinge for connecting` together the several sections.

The invention has for its object a device of this character which may be cheaply made, easily assembled, durable in construction, and eHcient in operation, and the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts which I shall now hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eiecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of an egg case embodying the improvements of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof; Fig.' 3 is a detail perspective view of two hinges connected together; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a single hinge; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view, the section being taken along the medial line of a series of hinges Fig. 6 is a similar view, the section being taken at one side of a series of hinges, both of these views illustrating how the various sections of the case maybe opened by means of my improved construction of hinge; and, Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one corner of the bottom section, illustrating the lower hinge bent underneath such section.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The egg case which I have `selected for the purpose of illustrating my invention, comprises a bottom section 1, a series of superposed intermediate sections 2 and a lid 3.

4 designates a series of my improved hinges that are used 1n securing the sections together and the lid to the uppermost section, and

which, in the present instance are shown as arranged in two vertically extending series located near the ends of the box or case.

Each hinge is preferably composed of a single strip or length of wire or similar suitlable material, and comprises two longitu dinal and preferably parallel members 5 connected together at one end by a cross bar 6. Near their upper ends, the longitudinal members 5 are looped upon themselves to form eyes 7 and the extremities 8 beyond such eyes are preferably sharpened and they extend through the rear wall of the box and are bent against the inner side of such wall, so as to secure the hinge to the box. In addition to the prongs or extremities 8 of the hinges,

each hinge may be further secured to the box by means of a pair of staples 9 straddling the longitudinal members 5. The cross bar of each hinge is received in the eyes of the hinge below it, so as to connect the hinges together,

as clearly illustrated in the drawing.

Preferably the lowermost hinge 10 projects below the bottom of the box or case and has its longitudinal members 5 offset as indicated at 10 so as to carry the cross bar 6 underneath and against the bottom of the case to assist in holding the hinges as against longitudinal displacement. The uppermost hinge is, of course, devoid of the eyes 7. The sections of the box or case may be secured one to the other by means of hasps 1l engaging keepers 12, and the lid may be held closed in any desired way, although I have shown, in the present instance a hasp 13 in the form of a strap extending from the bottom to the lid and secured at one end to the bottom, and at its other end to a staple or keeper 14 on the lid, so as to not only hold the lid down, but assist in holding all of the sections together. l

15 designates the bail or handle which is secured to the lid and by which the entire case may be carried from place to place. The bail 15 and the hasp 13 and their correlated arrangement form the subject-matter of another application of even date herewith. .From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, eiiicient, and durable construction of hinge, particularly for use where a series of hinges are connected together to hold a plurality of parts in hinged relation, one upon the other.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1 In combination, a series of box sections placed one upon the other, a series of hinge members connecting said box sections, each hinge member being of approximately U- form and having eyes near the ends of the side members, and having the end extensions beyond the eyes passed through a side of the box sections and clenched, the closed end of one member being fitted in the eyes of the adjacent member, and fastenings connecting the side members of the hinge members with the box sections near their closed ends.

2. In combination, a series of box sections placed one upon the other, a series of like hinge members connecting the box sections, each hinge member being of approximately7 U-form with its side members slightly converged towards their extremities and proe vided near their-ends with eyes and having extensions beyond the eyes, the hinge meme bers being arranged with their eyes short of one edge of the respective box sections to which they are attached and having their closed ends projected beyond the opposite edge of the box sections and received in the eyes of the adjacent mating hinge members, the said extensions ofthe hinge side members being passed through the respective box sections and clenched, and staples connecting the hinge members near their closed ends with the box sections, the terminal hinge members being bent over the top and under the bottom ybox sections, respectively, and secured thereto.
