BENJAMIN JOSHUA YOUNG, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
FOLDING FEED-38X.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7,1913.
Application filed Gctober 26, 1911. Serial No. 656,962.
T 0 all about it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN JOSHUA forms, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Feed-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in feed boxes.
Gne object of the invention is to provide a feed box formed of a plurality of hingedly connected sections adapted to be knocked down and folded together when not in use thus permitting the box to be readily carried or packed in a small space.
Another object is to provide a feed box of this character which will be simple, strong and durable in construction and which when set up in operative position forms an efficient sanitary feed box.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved folding feed box showing the same set up in position for use; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of one end of the box; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the box in folded position; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the box showing the sides and ends thereof opened out flat to facilitate the cleaning out of the box and the removal of any food remaining therein.
My improved folding feed box is preferably formed of sheet metal and comprises a bottom plate 1, side plates 2 and end plates 3. The side and end plates are hingedly connected respectively to the side and end edges of the bottom plate 1 as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. On the ends of the side plates 2 are formed right angular stop flanges d which when the side plates are swung upwardly to operative positions have their lower ends engaged with the inner side of the bottom plates thus supporting and holding the side plates against inward movement. The flanges 4: also form stops or supports for the end plates 3 which when swung upwardly to operative positions engage the outer surfaces, of said flanges as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
In order to hold the sides and ends 2 and 3 in an upright position to form the box, I provide a bail 5, said bail being preferably in the form of wire rods which are bent inwardly at right angles at one end to form attaching members 6, said members being provided with heads 7 and are loosely engaged with holes 8 formed in one of the end plates 3 of the box. The opposite ends of the rods are also bent at right angles as shown at 9, said angular bent ends having their extremities bent into the form of hooks 10 which are adapted to be engaged when the rods are brought together around the sides and ends of the box thus forming the bail and firmly holding the sides and ends in an upright operative position to form the box. The upper ends of the end plates 3 are preferably extended, said extensions being tapered and bent outwardly and downwardly to form handles 11 by means of which the box may be readily gripped and lifted or carried.
By constructing the box as herein shown and described it will be seen that the hinged sides and ends of the box may be readily swung upwardly and engaged with each other in the manner described to form the box and which, when desired may be quickly released and swung outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 6 whereby the parts of the box may be readily cleaned and all remaining food removed therefrom, leaving the box in asanitary condition after which the sides and ends may be folded back upon themselves and upon the bottom as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings in which position the box may be readily packed or stored away in a small space. A feed box of this character is especially adapted for traveling purpose and for feeding cavalry or artillery horses or other draft animals which are continuously moving from place to place.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
1. A folding box comprising a fiat bottom plate, separate side and end plates hinged to said bottom plate at the edges thereof, two of the oppositely disposed hinged plates having inturned flanges on the ends thereof, the lower ends of said flanges engaging said bottom plate when said flanged plates are swung to operative position thereby holding said plates in uprightpo-sition against inward movement, said flanged plates having their ends arranged inside said unflanged plates when the parts are in operative position, the flanges forming stops to receive the untlanged plates when the latter are swung upwardly to operative position, and a bail connected to one of said plates and adapted to be swung into engagement with the other plates to hold them. in operative position to form the box.
2. A folding box comprising a flat bottom plate, separate side and end plates hinged to said bottom plate at the edges thereof, two of the oppositely disposed hinged plates having inturned flanges on the ends thereof, the lower ends of said flanges engaging said bottom plate when said flanged plates are swung to operative position thereby holding said plates in up right position against inward movement, said flanged plates having their ends arranged inside said unflanged plates when the parts are in operative position, the flanges forming stops to receive the unflanged plates when the latter are swung upwardly to operative position, a bail for holding said plates in operative position comprising two rods bent inwardly at one end to form plate engaging members and having their outer ends bent inwardly at right angles with their terminals bent to form interlocking hooks.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN JOSHUA YOUNG.
