WILLIAM S. SOULE, or BOSTON, AND JOHN SHERRIFF, OF DEDHAM, MASS.
VIMPROVEMENT IN ,TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,738, dated August 29, 1876; application'filed April 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. SoULE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, and JOHN SHERRIFF, of Dedham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Trunks, TravelingOases, &o., of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of trunks, traveling-cases, &c., from rawhide, said hide being cut, shaped, molded, and then riveted together, so astoform a very strong and durable article.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one application of our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing the construction. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the molded corner-piece. Fig. 4 is a section through the hinge.
Our invention is capable of being applied to a great variety of portable receptacles to be used by travelers, merchants, carriers, 860.
In Fig. 1 we have shown our invention as applied to a trunk, of which the sides B B, ends A A,.and bottom are all made from thick plain pieces of rawhide. The large pieces forming the ends, sides, top, and bottom of the trunk are re-enforced or strengthened by the molded pieces of rawhide G O, 8210., Figs. 1 and 2. These pieces 0 O are corrugated, as shown in Fig. 2. The hollow space formed by the corrugations may be filled with strips of rawhide or of metal, 8210., as may be desired, and riveted on. The plane angles of the trunk are united by molded angle-pieces K K of rawon as shown. The solid angles of the trunk are strengthened and protected by molded pieces E E E, one of which is shown enlarged in Fig. 3. These angle-pieces are molded up .from strong rawhide, and. firmly attached to the body of the trunk by metallic rivets, as
shown. .The upper or exposed edges of the trunk, as well as the vertical edges of the cover, are protected by the re-enforcing folded pieces D, Figs. 1 and 2. The cover of the trunk is provided with overlapped pieces L, which serve, when the lid is closed, to cover the joint between the lid and the body of, the trunk. The lid is joined to the trunk by two rawhide pieces, M M, Figs. 1 and 4, which are molded and cut as shown. These parts M M, When united by the metallic rod P, Fig. 4, form the hinge. 7
From the above description it may be seen that our device consists of molded rawhide united by rivets, and that by this invention we obtain a very durable and convenient portable package-case, which may be applied to a great variety of uses.
We claim- The improved trunk, provided with cornercaps E, angle-pieces K, and corrugated reeni'orcing strips 0, all formed of rawhide, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM S. SOULE. JOHN SHERRIFF.
