To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marblehead, in the county of Ottawa and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trousers-Supporting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactidescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of this invention is to provide a means on trousers for elastically engaging the supporting belt at the back, to support the trousers at that point While allowing a yielding movement of the trousers with relation to the belt. V

Another object is to so arranged the device that it may be simple, easily manufac tured and readily attached.

A more specific object is to arrange such supporting device in the form of a loop through which the belt extends and which may be concealed by one of the usual belt straps in the rear.

Another object is to prevent the belt moving upwardly with relation to the trousers, sufliciently to come over the top of the same adjacent the point of the yielding support.

The above and other features of my invention are hereinafter more fully described in connection with the drawings, and the essential characteristics are set forth in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation of a portion of a pair of trousers showing the supporting belt with my supporting device embracing the same; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through the belt and supporting device and showing the means for preventing the trousers folding beneath the belt; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a plate sewed inside of the trousers opposite the yielding support. 7

Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 10 indicates a pair of trousers having the usual belt straps 12 and 13 at the sides, and provided with belt straps (not shown) in the front, through which the belt 14, extends. Between these side belt straps is the usual belt strap 25 in the middle of the back of the trousers, which, as trousers are ordinarily made, is subjected to considerable strain when the wearer assumes a stooping or sitting position. This strain causes the trousers to draw on the body of the wearer and is frequently the source of considerable discomfort. To prevent this,

I prefer to secure the belt to the trousers at the back, in a position normally below the upper edge (for example with the top of the belt an inch or so from the top of the trousers at, this point), with a yielding means, allowing the movement of the'belt with relation to the trousers, or, more specifically, allowing the trousers to move downwardly beneath the belt when there is a downward vstrain at the rear of the trousers.

15 indicates an elastic loop preferably made of ribbon-like elastic material, and sewed to the trousers at 16, at the lower end of the loop. This loop is adapted to receive the belt and allow a downward movement of the adjacentportion of the trousers with relation to the belt, at all times yieldingly sup; porting the trousers at this point. A thin plate 18, which maybe of thin metal or other stiff material,,and shown as triangular in form, is provided with a slot 19, adjacent its lower edge, through which the threads 16 securing the. loop 15, may extend, to secure the lower edge of this plate in place adjacent the inside of the cloth of the trousers, opposite the loop. At the upper end of the plate is an eye 20, adapted to receive threads 21 for securing the same to the trousers, as shown. This plate when in position, is

secured to the upper edge of the inside of the trousers.

Now it will be seen that the trousers may be drawn downwardly with relation to the belt at the point opposite the elastic loop, thereby giving substantially the entire rear portion of the trousers a yielding movement, preventing uncomfortable strains to the wearer. It will also be seen that the stiff plate 18 prevents the trousers beneath the belt at the rear, folding under the belt and preventing the free return movement as the loop contracts after the strain is relieved.

It is desirable to cover the elastic loop with the usual rear belt strap 25, which is preferably sewed first at its lower edge to the trousers at 26, and then sewed to the upper edge of the trousers at 27. This loop is shown in Fig. 1 as extending upwardly from the upper edge of the trousers, for clearness of illustration.

When the belt and trousers are in their normal position on the wearer, the elastic loop draws the belt downwardly slightly, as shown in Fig. 1, which tends to cause a tighteningof the-belt around the'b'ody of-the wearer, and it is obvious that if he assumes a position which causes a longitudinal strainonrthe belt itself, the belt will be drawn straight around the wearer, the loop-yield ing upwardly and allowing a slight relative which is in itself a desirable "feature. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
