IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,698, dated May 9, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT MCGRATH, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad- Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists .in the construction and'arrangement of a sad-iron,

as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same I will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of my sad-iron. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a shield used with the same.

A represents the sad-iron proper, which is cast with an. ear or projection, a, on its upper side.

In front and rear of this projection there is a hole in the upper side of the sad-iron, as shown by dotted lines in Fig.1.

The handle for the sad-iron is constructed in the following manner A frame is east composed of the horizontal bar B and side, or rather end, bars 0 O. In the center of the bar B is a slot or mortise of suitable size tofit over the projection a on the sad-iron, and on each side of said slot is an upward-projecting ear, 1), corresponding in size with the projection.

On the under side of the bar 13, near each end, is a pin, i, to fit in the holes in the iron. The bar B is placed on the iron in the position indicated, and a pin, d, is passed through holes made for that purpose in the cars a and b I), thus securing said bar to the iron.

The end bars 0 O incline outward and upward, as shown in Fig. 1, having shoulder 0 formed on their inner sides, near, or at a suitable distance from, the lower ends.

Between the upper ends of the bars 0 C the wooden handle D is secured and from the ends of said handle wooden arms ff descend.

Upon the outer sides, near or at the lower ends of the armsff, are formed enlargements or shoulders h, which rest upon the shoulders e of the bars (3 O, and thus there is lefta space almost the entire distance between each bar 0 and armf.

Upon the inner side of each arm f is another shoulder, m, on which rests the Wooden shield E, constructed as shown in Fig. 3. By this means the hand is entirely protected from the heat.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The cast frame composed of slotted bar B and the end bars 0 G, in combination with handle D and wooden arm ff, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the iron A with car a, bar B, with ears I) 'b and pins 2' i, ear-bars O O, handle D, arms ff, and shield E, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
