SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,135, dated May 17, 18617,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEBBEUS G. HARDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pierre, in the county of Hughes and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle-Setters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for straightening or bending axles; and the novelty 0on sists in the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed 'out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the power being applied in opposite directions and a changeable fulcrum used to correspond with the power. Fig. 3' is adetail cross-section taken 011 the line 00 m, Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of modifications of my invention; and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line y y, Fig. 2.
I11 carrying out my invention I employ a vhorizontally-disposed body, A, having a projection, a, on one end and bowl a on the other. This body serves as a lever, and is provided with an apertured ear, c from which is suspended a chain, a, carrying a pin, 1), which pin serves to securea vertical clamp, 13, passed througha central aperture in the bowl a, said clamp having on its upperend a hook adapted to pass over and engage the axle 0.
II designates a block having wedge-surfaces on different levels, as seen at h, and it is adapted to be forced between the shoulder 6 upon the clamp B and the lower surface of the axle, to hold these parts firmly in position.
D designates a fulcrum arranged to hold the axle and body A in a designated and rigid relative position,which fulcrum consists of a right and left hand threaded rod, (1, having a central circular portion, (1, apertured as shown. Upon the upper screw-threaded end of this red is disposed a circular pointed thimble, d", and upon the lower end a second thinible, diwhich is provided with a central aperture extending inwardly therein a short distance, whereby the same is caused to fit snugly the upper edge or surface of the body A, as shown in Fig. 1. By inserting a bar or handle within any one of the apertures of the central circular portion, d, the thimbles on the threaded rod will be raised or lowered, as maybe desired. This form of fulcrum, as shown in Fig. 1, is designated to serve when the curvature of the axle is concave upward. WVhen the curvature is convex upward, I reverse the power, as seen in Fig. 2, in which case the fulcrum engages the opposite surfaces of body and axle.
The form of fulcrum shown in Fig. 2 consists of a clamp, E, composed of two side pieces, a e, the same being pivoted together at their upper ends, and the former, c, is bifurcated and apertured on its lower end,wherein the side piece, 6, is designed to be secured by means of a pin, 0 as shown in Fig. 2. This clamp is intended to slide on the body A, the inner surfaces of its side pieces conforming to the sides thereof and to the surface of the axle. The lower inner surfaces of the side pieces have conjointly an aperture, e, for fitting and sliding on a bead, c, on the lower edge of the body A. y
F designates a bifurcated frame having a series of holes, f, arranged oppositely in pairs to receive the pin f, suspended by a chain, f from any convenient part of the frame F. The extension at of the body A is received within the bifurcated sides of the frame, and a loop, F, arranged upon the upper part of the frame serves to engage the end of the hub or axle upon which it is designed to operate;
G designates an eccentric having a leverhandle, 9, and having perforations arranged away from the center to receive the pin f.
NVhen the axle is bent concave upward, the fulcrum D is used, as shown in Fig. 1, and the eccentric operates against the lower side of the extension or of the body A. hen, however, the curvature is in an opposite direction, I eniploy the fulcrum-clamp, as shown in Fig. 2, and the eccentric is operated upon the upper side of said extension.
The operation of the device is apparent to those skilled in the art.
In lieu of the fulcrum D of the described form of construction, I can, if desired, employ a fulcrun1-block, I, having a pointed lower end and a headed screw working in its central portion and projecting therefrom. In the event of the employment of this form of fulcrum, the upper surface of the body A is provided wit-h a series of seats, 2', arranged to receive the pointed end of the fulcrum.
The fulcrum E, of the described formation, maybe dispensedwith and a clamp, D, (shown in Fig. 5,) having at each end a hook, may be used in lieu thereof.
While I have designated the concavity of the curvature of the axle as being up or down, it is obvious that the machine will treat curves in a lateral or angular direction by changing the relative bearing between the machine and the axle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for straightening axles, the combination, with the body having a clamp secured to one end thereof, said clamp having a hooked end and a shoulder for wedgingblocks, of the adjustable fulcrum comprising the threaded rod having thimbles secured on its ends, the bifurcated frame, and the eccentric-lever secured in said frame by a pin passed therethrough, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the body and the clamp secured through the bowl of said body, of the bifurcated frame having a loop at one end and a series of holes or apertures, an eccentric-lever arranged to be operated above or below the body, and an interchangeable fulcrum, as set forth.
3. The eombination,with the frame, the eccentric-lever held by a pin, and the fulcrum, of the body having bowl at one end, the clamp secured in said bowl by a pin and having a shoulder and a hook, and the wedge-block provided with wedging'surfaces at different levels. all arranged forjoint operation, as described.
