Be it known that 1, HUGH L. T. Ovnnnnv, of Summerville, in the county of Ohattooga and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Belt-Punch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to punching machines, and has for its object to provide an effective and durable machine for punching holes in leather belts.

The invention consistsin apunch constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 is a side View of the invention, partly in section and partly broken away; and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with support broken away.

In the construction of this invention I em ploya vertically-reciprocating rod,1,monnted in a metallic frame, 2, preferably constructed with a base, 3, and arms at 5, through which the vertical rod 1 passes, and between which is located a coiled spring, 6, connected by one end to the rod 1 just beneath the arm 5, and pressing at its other end against the arm 4. To the top of the rod 1 is pivoted at 8 a lever, 7, pro vided with a suitable handle, 9, and formed at its outer end with a recess, 10, through which projects the end of a brace-rod, 11, having a pin, 12, which retains the lever 7 in place and acts as a fulcrum thereto. The rod 11 passes through suitable apertures in the arms 5 4, and is curved, as at 13, and passes into an aperture in the lower part of the frame 2. The rod 11 is firmly riveted in the arms 5 4 and in the frame 2, so as to form a firm and steady support to the lever 7.

In practice the relative arrangement of the parts -that is, of the block 18 and rod 1 in the arms at 5-is such that there may be a rise and fall of eighteen inches for the bit or punch 16.

In the operation of the punch herein described it is necessary that the operating parts should be mounted in stout supports, and with this in view, to provide forthe vigorous action of the lever 7 and rod 1, the bracerod 11 is employed in addition to the arms 45 and frame 2. It will be seen by the construction of the lever 7 with the slotted end 10 that free play can be given to the lever and vertical rod 1, and the force of the blow so distributed that a vigorous punch can be given with the punch ing-bit 16.

By means of a punch constructed as herein described holes may be easily and effectively punched in a leather belt. \Vhile the machine is preferably used for punching holes in leather belts it is evident that it may be used for punching holes in leather used for other purposes.

Having lhusdescribed my invention, I claim as newand desire to secn re by Letters Patent A machine for punching holes in leather, consisting of a frame, 2, mounted on the base 3, having a beariug'block, 1S, and arms 1 5, with a brace-rod, 11, passing through. the arms 4 5 and into the frame 2, and riveted thereto, and having an extension provided with a stop pin, 12, in combination with the vertically-reciprocating rod 1, having a spring, 6, ascrewthreaded end, 14, securing-nut 15, and punch 16, and the lever 7, with slotted end 10, substantially as described.
