, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC A. MUROHISON, OF MANCHESTER, NORTH CAROLINA.
TONG S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,105, dated July 31, 1883,
' Application filed June 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ISAAC A. MUROHISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Cumberland and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in tongs of the class used in handling fire-wood; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the same, whereby the gripping ends are prevented from passing one another when brought together, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view, part sectional, of my tongs; and Fig. 2, a detail view.
Referring by letter to the accompanying V drawings, A designates the tongs, provided with the handle a, that is a part of the semicircular upper portion, b, which latter extends only a short distance from said handle, while the opposite side of said tongs, the arm a, and portion 12 form one piece, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The opposite arm, d, it will i be seen, is not rigid with the semicircular portion I), but is pivoted thereto. The same is provided with projecting lug e near its'upper end, that is perforated for-the passage of a pin, f, that also passes through perforations g in the end of the portion 0, whereby the arm (I is hinged or pivoted to said portion. On each side of said lug are formed shoulders h h, in which the circular endsi t have a bearing, and between the ends 13 i is a vertical slot, j, to receive the lug, and in which the latter is pivoted. At the upper portion of the arm d, and
extending obliquely and inwardly, is a short arm, k, that is a part of the arm (I, and has its bearing in a slot, Z, formed in a bar, m,
which extends obliquely across the opening a to each side of the semicircular portion b, as shown.
It will be observed that by my construction of tongs the gripping ends are prevented from passing one another, as the short arm it, playing within the slot, cannot move sidewise. Consequently the arm d is prevented from a sidewise movement; Thus the two gripping ends are compelled to meet when the tongs are closed, and the tongs are durable and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. As an improvement in tongs having the rigid arm 0 and hinged arm (I, provided with the oblique short arm is, the combination therewith of the diagonally-arranged bar m, slotted, as described, to receive the said extended short arms, whereby lateral movement of the arms 0 and d is prevented, as shown and described.
2. In a tongs of the class described, the combination, with the arm (2, pivoted at its upper portion to the forked end 0, and having shoul ders h h to engage the ends 1' 1 and provided with the oblique arm k, of the crossbar m, slotted at l, and adapted to receive said arm k, the whole operatingas described and shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC A. MURCHISON.
Vitnesses:
JNO." I-I. ROBINSON, A. K. McDIARMID.
