DUNDAS DICK, or NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR r0. MARI-E A. MAUGER,
I or SAME PLACE.
7 Letters Patent No. 114,651, dated may 9, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FORHO'LDING'PA'CKAGES, 8w.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters -Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DUNDAS DICK, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York,
have invented a new and improved Machine for Holding Packages, Books, &c.,' to be Tied or Finished; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part held.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a pair of spring jaws having swivel-buttons, between which the packages are held.
The jaws canbe opened by treadle mechanism to I release the completed packages and receive those to be tied or finished. In the putting upof all kinds of merchandise, such as tobacco, medicines, toilet goods, playing-cards, hardware, &c., the use of this device is of great advantage,
- as it'enables the ,attendant to use both hands, and therefore work with more than double rapidity.
The same advantages are gained when my new apparatus is used for holding books, boxes, or other things to be finished at the edges.
v In the accompanying drawing myinvention is clearly iliustmted- Figure 1 being a perspective;
Figure 2, a side view on a reduced scale at the same; and
Figure 3, a detail transverse section. of the upper ends of the jaws.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
v A B in the drawing are the spring jaws, connected; in one piece or made entirely separate, as may be desired, but so that the spring power has a tendency to: draw the upper ends together.
To the ends of the jaws are secured, on their inner sides, swivel-buttons O O, which are exactly in line, so that their faces are held together by the spring pressure, in the manner clearly indicated in fig. 3.
The buttons turn either on or with their fasteningpins to, and can be'coveredwith rubber or other fabric of adhesive character.
The package or thing D to be manipulated is placed between the buttons by spreading the jaws, sothat it will be securely held by the spring power. It can be turned with the bnttous,.which, notwithstanding the pressure, will easily revolve, and each edge can therefore be brought within convenient reach for folding, handling, or finishing.
The jaws are secured 'to a suitable frame or table, E.- One of them may, by a string, 1), or otherwise, be connected with a lever or treadle, F, to be conveniently opened.
In placeof the spring p'owe'r, weight may be used on the jaws with equal eflect.
Having thus describedmy invention,
I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent w The self-closing jawsA B, provided with the swivelbuttons, substantially as and for the purpose. herein shown and described.
' DUNDAS DICK.
