Letters Patent No. 103,466, dated May 24, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRIPLPRESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all lwhom. it may concern:
AFigure 3 is a transverse section of the same when closed.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a press intended to facilitate the operation of gl neng strips of wood together on their edges, said strips, after having been supplied at their edges with glue, being placed on a frame between a stationary abutment and a follower, while their ends are pressed up against a rimprojecting from the platform supporting the frame. Apressingflap, provided with elastic bearing-surfaces, is' then locked down upon the strips, so as to hold the same tlat down upon the receiving frame, and, by turninga suitable cam, the follower is caused to press against the edge of the outer strips, and to retain the strips in a compressed stateuntil the' glue has set.
In the drawinglhe letterA designates a platform, which is provided with a raised rim, a, on one and with a hinged flap, b, on the opposite side.
On this platform is placed a frame, B, which, when the Hap b is turned up, fits nicely between the same and the rim (t, and which is provided with one or more abutments, c, and one or more followers, d.
These followers are placed at such a distance from their abutmeuts that room is left to introduce two or more strips. of wood, which are glued together on their edges.
The length of these strips is equal to the width o f the frame B, so that, when the frame is on'the. platform and the strips are adjusted on the frame, by turning'up the flap b the ends ofthe strips are firmly pressed up against the raised rim a.
In order to provide an even bearing-surface for the strips, the frame B is furnished with three raised ribs, e, by preference made of metal.
To the rima of the platform is hinged the, pressing-ap C, which is provided with a series of elastic pads, j', so that, when said flap is turnedv down upon the strips, the pads will depress the same upon the ribs c of -the frame B with a yieldinglpressure, said pads being so constructed that they can accommodate them selves to any irregularity existing in the lthickness of the strips.
The pressi ngvfiap 'is locked down by means of screws g, which are hinged to the ends ofl the platform A, and provided with lever-nuts h, and which, when turned up, can be made to catch in mortises t in the flaps, (see g. 1.) By these means all the strips upon the frame can be held down with the requisite amount of I pressure.
The followers d are subjected to the action of cams j, which revolve loosely on the cross-ties of the frame B, and which can be turned by suitable keys k. By turning these cams in the proper direction, the followers are moved toward their abutments 0,*aud the stripsy situated between them, and their abutments are firmly compressed. In this state the frame B is taken out and put away until the glue has set, and in the mean time a new frame is put in, iilled withV strips and treated as above stated.
By referring to'iig. 2 of the drawing, it will be seen that the frame B is provided with two cams, j, each of which actuates two followers, so that the frame is capable of receiving four sets of strips to be glued together. By these means the operation of glueing strips of wood together' cdgeways is materially facilitated, and much `time and labor are saved.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
vl. The frame B, provided with one or more followers, d, and correspondingabutments c, in combination with the hinged flap b and pressing-Hap C on the platform A, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination therewith, the 'elastic pads f on the pressing-flap O, operating in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. rlhe unattached double cam j, acting on the set of followers al in reverse order, in combination with frame B, hinged flap b, and pressing-flap C, substantially as described.
