Description

Letters Patent No. 77,030, dated April 21, 1868,
IMPROVED BUTTER-TUB.
@its dgttule einen tu in their trtters rztin filmmaking met nt tige smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN Be it known that I, D. A. GILBERT, of Morristown, in the county of Lamoille, andin the State of Vermonti.
have invented certain newA and useful Improvements in Butter-Tubs; and do herebydeclare that the following,
is a. full, clear, and' exact 'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a pail or tub for holding butter, which may he constructed generally yin any ofthe well-known and usual ways. To the outside of the tub, and extending e little above its upper edge, are three metallic. bers, B B B, which are secured at equal distances apart. These bars are formed as represented, having grooves in their inner faces to receive the rim of the cover C. The cover is provided with en annular shoulder, as vseen at z, which fits' snugly within the mouth of the tub, for the purpose of A'assisting in holding it in place, and the same time assisting in making it 'airtight. The rim oi' the cover extends overthe upper edge of the tub, and is provided with three slots, D D, through which the bars B B pass, to enable the rim to iit'snugly down upon the edge of the tub.
A When the` cover has been flttend'upon the tub,.by passing the upper ends of the bars B through the slots f D, said' cover is turned partially around, so that its rim will enter the grooves in the bers for the purpose of holding it securely in position. Pnoking a, made of felt or rubber, er other suitable material, is secured ou the under side of the rim, at thatpoint where the said rim fits upon the edge of the tub. y el e represent wedges, which are forced between lthe upper side ofthe` rim of the-cover and the upper lips of the grooves in bers BB, for the purpose of pressing the cover and its paekingrmly down upon the edge of the tub.7 for the purpose of making-said tub perfectly air-tight. The grooves in the bars B Barc intended to be made' a little haring, or wedge-shaped, so 'that they' will readily receive and retain the wedges e e, ns is representedin iig. 3. By this arrangement Iam enabled to make a very simple, cheap, and effective butter-tub-a tub which will exclude the atmosphere, and consequently keep butt-er fresh end pure.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I 'claim as new, and desire tofsecure by'Letters Patenti, is- The bars B B, constructed as described, andfused -in combination with the cover C, packing a, and ridges e e, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, -I have hereuntorset my hand, this 4th dey of April, 1868.
' i D. A. GILBERT.
