Description

r e l,
JOHN CHARLTON, O-F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Leners' PamNo. 88,848, daad April 13, 1869. i
IMPROVEMENT IN wRENeHEs.
MOH- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom may concern.-
Be it known hat I, JOHN CHARLTON, of Newark, in the'couuty of Essex, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrenches; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. Y
My invention relates to 4 an improvement on the wrench patented by William Baxter, February `12, 1856; and consists in making the two parts so that one will slide inside the other, instead .of side by side whereby ll amv enabled to make a stronger wrench, and one less liable to get out of repair,l or break with -heavy strains, and being also easier to manufacture.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same,
I will now proceed to describe its construction and op-` eration, referring to the annexed drawings, which form 'a part of this specification, andin'which- Figure l is a side view of the wrench complete; and
Figures 2 and 3 show the construction of the two parts.
A represents one part of the wrench, which is constructed so as to form two sides, with a proper space between them, and having, ateach end, ajaw, B.
C represents the other part of the wrcnch, and is made so as to t and slide in the hollow space between the two sides of the part A. vThe sliding part, C, is also provided, at each end, with a jaw, B.
At a suitablepoint, the two sides of the piece A are joined together, through which a screw, D, passes.
This screw enters into the piece C, and, by turning the screw D, the part C is made toslide inward or outward, thereby opening and closing the jaws at either end, simultaneously, in order to fit various sizes of nuts and screws.
Having thus fully described my'invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The longitudinally-grooved plate A, enlargedat its centre, and forming one half of a jaw, B, at each end, in combination with the inner-moving plate C, with its half-jaw B, at each end, and diagonal grooves near said l ends, acting as guides for the inner tongues on the plate A, when operated by the screw D, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 21st day of November, 1868.
. JOHN CHARLTON. Witnesses DAVID A. GoGLrN, GEORGE V. MARTEN.
