IMPROVEMENT IN APPARTUSFOR PRESSING PAPER COLLARS.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,785, dated February 20, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. DARLINeToN, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding or Pressing Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a section, transversely, of the rollers employed in my machine, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of said machine at the end Where the collar is entered.

Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.

Collars have been extensively manufactured from paper, and such collars have been formed of one thickness of paper, and also in the shape of a folded or turned-over collar.` Previous to my invent-ion such folded paper collars were apt to bend with sharp curves and angles when placed around the neck, much to the inconvenience of the wearer, as. well as being unsightly. To obviate this difficulty was the object of my invention.

The said invention consists in two or more rollers combined with a central or main roller or cylinder, and with a guide, through which the collar is presented, so that the two or more rollers press the fold down flatly at the same timeth at they wrap the collar suiicieutly around the main roller to give it the required curved form in order that it may set smoothly around the neck.

In the drawings, a a are the side frames of the machine, held together by suitable crosspieces I). c is the main cylinder or roller, that is rotated by a crank, d, or other device. e, f, and g are rollers above and toward one side of the cylinder c. These rollers are sustained by theirjournals passing into boxes z' i, set n jaws that stand radially to the cylinder o, and set-screws la, pressing upon springs or blocks of rubber, cause the rollers e, f, and f/ to press the collarv against the cylinder c with thedesired force as said collar is passed between them, w hich operation not only folds down the collar closely, but also gives to the whole collar a curved or cylindrical -shape in order that it may set more smoothly around the neck.

I employ a guide, l, made of sheet metal or other material, into which the end of the collar to be pressed is passed, so that the ends are kept togetherl so as to enter correctly between the rollers c and e.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-

The combination of two or more rollers with a central or main roller, and with a guide, l, through which the collar is entered to the rollers, substantially as and for the purposes specied.
