Description
dinard mes THOMAS w. BRACHER, or NEW'YQRK, N. Y.
Lette/rs Patent No. 91,077, dated v.Tu-nc 8, 1869; antedavtell llfay- 28, 1869.
IMPRQVEMENT IN CUTTING- '.EIAT-'I'IPSV The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentand making part of the same.
To all whom fit 'ma-y concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BRACHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a neweand useful Improvement in Cutting Tips for Hats and Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact'description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to malreand 'use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part f this specication, in which drawby stitching, or otherwise, and finally cutting throughthe whole pile by means of a knife, which is forced through the pile by a suitable press.
The devices which I use in carrying out my invention are illustrated in the drawing, where A represents a box, of wood, or any other suitable material, open` at one end, and provided at the opposite end with a standard, B, from which extends an arm, C, over the whole length of the box, as shown iu lig. 2. This arm is provided with a slot, a, through which I pass the fabric tobe folded and cut.
The box A is m'ade of a width equal to the single or multiple major axis of the tfps to be cut, (said tips being in the shape of an ellipse,) and may be so Vconstruct'ed that itswidth can beadj usted for tips of different size or shape.
Into this box is gifted a series of flat plates, b, of tinned sheet-iron, or other suitable material, and these plates are provided with holes c, as shown.V
The end of the fabric being drawn through the slot a in the arm C, is spread on the bottom of the box, one of the-plates, b, is placed on, the fabric is folded over this plate, and a second plate is placed on, the
fabric is folded over'this plate, and a third plate is put on, and so forth, until the entire piece of the fabric is arranged in the box, as indicated in red outlines iu fio'. 1.
aDuring the operation of folding, however, the plates, lying between the layers, at or'near the bottom of the' pile, can'be drawn out and used over and over again, so that a comparatively small number of plates is sufficient to complete the operation of folding.
After thepfabric has thus been folded, all the plates, with the exception of that on top, are withdrawn, and the pile is fastened by stitching through theholes c, or by any other suitable means, and after the last plate h as been removed, the pile is taken ont of the box A Y and cut. v
The operation of cutting is elfected by a knife, the shape of the cutting-edge of which isrepresented by the curved lines in (ig. 3, and which is so formed that it can be placed under a press aud forced through the whole pile.
I am aware that tips for hats and caps are cut out by knives or scissors, but only few at a time, and without folding the fabric, and fastening the pile, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, y
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 1. The mode of preparing fabric, adapting it for being cnt into tips for hats and caps, by folding said fabric in continuous layers, with the interposed perforatcd plates c, then removing`said plates, excepting the upper one, and through'the perfbrations thereof uniting the entire series of folds, and thereby form a completed pile, to be subjected to the knives, as herein described.
2. Also, for the purpose of the' above mode of preparing fabric as stated, the open-end box A, and the elevated slotted arm C, combined and operating as represented and described.
T. W. BRAOHER.
Vitnesses:
W. HAUFF, J. C. PoLLnR.
