IMPROVE!) MACHINE FOR FQLDING- AND CUTTING- MlATEl-RIAll.:` FOR SHOE-UPPERS, 81e- The .Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and part of the same.
To all whom zt ana/y comm/ra:-
Be it known that we, G. W. PARROTT, B. F. PAR- Rocr'r, and E. H. TIMSON, all of Lynn, in the. county' of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have inventedv certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for' Folding and Cutting Materialfor Shoe-Uppers, Src.;
and we do hereby .declare that the following is a full and exact description' thereof, reference heing had to the Iaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,Y
The. nature of our invention consists- First, in constructing the folding-table of the cuttingmachine so that it may be'turned into a vertical position, for conveniencein folding and attaching the material also, in providing the said table with a series of jsharp pins projecting through it, upon which the cloth 'may be hung While being folded, said pins beingconnected with a movable bar beneath the table, so that they may be withdrawn from the material at a single operation.
Second, in using, iii-,combination with the vibrating D represents the main shaft, which carries a ly-` wheel, E, and acrank-disk, H. The shaft-D does not make a complete revolution, its action being reciprocal.
Fis a boot-board, attached to two levers, one of which, F', is shown.
The lever F is attached to a staple in the shaft D, as represented in iig. l, so thatL when the foot-board F is depressed, the shaft D niakes a part revolution.
K is a vertical-reciprocating head-block, which is actllated by two pitmen, one of which. H', is shown in g. lf.
These pitlnen connect with two crank-disks attached to the end of the shaft D, one of which, H, is shown.
From the above description, it will be seen that by depressing the foot-board,the-hcadblock K will be pressed down. Its upward action is caused by a spring, S, shown in dotted lines in lig. 1.
The table N is hinged to one or more fixed standards,
uppers, &c., a table folding down, and operating-fis like'm, figs. l and 2, and has attached to its opposite edge, by hinges, one or more legs, like the one represented by T, fig. 2, which may be folded'under the table, to admit of the tables being let down, to assume the vertical position represented in dotted lines in fig.
P is a longitudinal bar, placed immediately under the edge of the table, as shown in the drawings, and has aixed to it a series offpins, 11 1), 85e., which extend upward through perforations made in the table.
The bar P, to which the pins are fixed, is' movable, that is,- it may be lowered sufliciently to withdraw all of the pins to a point below the surface of the table.
' Fig. 3 representsa die or cutter, which is made by: alixing to the edge of a properly-formed block, Q, -a number of thin pieces of steel, R It', 85o., forming jointsat each angle.
To-operate our machine, we proceed as follows:
The table N, which may be of any desired length, is turned down, as represented by dotted lines. in fig. 2, then one fold of the cloth or fabric is hooked to the pins p p, Ste., for the entire lengthof the table. At the end of the table the cloth is carefully folded, and the second fold is attached to the pins as before. This operation is repeated until the 'cloth is accurately folded, and ade1 justed to itself and the table. Now, the table is raised to a horizontal position, and there held by the leg T. The pins being withdrawn by lowering the bar P, the cloth. is ready to be drawn over the cutting-block L, the head-block K being elevated. l
To complete the operation, lay the dies 'or cutters upon the cloth, and bring down the head-block Kr-by depressing the foot-board L. From the fact we use movable dies, the cloth can be" cut in our machinewith the same economy of material" that it could be cut by hand, theoperator adjusting the dies on the cloth to the best advantage.
What we claim 'our invention, and desire to Secure byLetters Patent, isv ln a machine for folding and cutting material for sh stantially as described, and for the purpose'set forth.
Also, in combination with the same, the pin-bar l,
working substantially as described, and for tlleipurpose set forth. v G. W. PARROTT.v B. F. PARROTT.
Witnesses: H. lIMSON.
