Be it known that I, J. F. SACHSE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Instrument for Making Folds in Fabrics; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, vand exact description of the same.

My invention consists of an adjustable blade, operating in combination with an adjustable bar, substantially as described hereafter, so that a series of pla'its or folds, of any required width', may be formed in strips of fabric, as, for instance, in strips frein which shirt-besoins or other articles are to be made.

Inorder to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms 4a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation 'of my improved instrument for making folds in fabrics,

A is a table, to the top, B, of which, near the opposite edges, are secured guides a a, and between the latter fits an adjustable bar, 6. Across the table extends a thin metal blade, e, each end of which is secured to two vertical rods, ce, passing through the adjacent guide'a, through the top of the table, and through a hanger, C, secured to the under side of the same. The two rods c c, at each side of thetable, arc connected together at their lower ends by a cross-piece, i, and round each rod is coiled a spring, n, which bears against the hanger C,

and against a shoulder on the rod, the several springs thus tending to maintain Athe blade in an elevated posi tion. To each cross-piece z'is secured a cord, which is connected at the lower end to a bar attached to a treadle, D, hungto the rear legs of the table. On the upper face of the adjustable barb is a series of longitudinal lines, :r z, which are parallel to the edge of the bar, and in the guides a a, turn set-screws o o, by which the bar 6 may be secured in any position to which it has been adjusted., The iirst fold or plait is made in a strip of fabric 'in the usual manner. The operator then takes a position in front of the instrument, and,'after introducing the fabric between the bar I) and the blade C, deprcsses the latter by applying his foot to the trcadle D. The strip is then drawn forward until the fold or plait strikes the front edge of the bar b. The fabric is now turned back over the top of the blade C, as shown in lig. 1, and is pressed against the front edge of the blade, by 4drawingacross it a strip of polished ivory, or other suitable material, so as to make a crease. The operator then removes his'foot from the treadle, when the springs n will elevate the rod c and the blade; after which the fabric is withdrawn, is folded at the point where it is creased, and is sewed in the ordinary manner, a second plait. being thus produced. The fabric is now passed a second time between the blade and the bar, is drawn forward until the plait last formed strikes the front edge of the bar, and a new crease is made in the same manner as the first. As the width of the fold or plait depends upon the distance between the inner edge of the bar b and the outer edge of the blade C, it is only necessary to properly adjust the bar b in order to produce folds of any desired width.

It will be seen that this instrument is especially adapted for folding strips of fabric from which shirt-bosoms are to be made, and in which it is necessary that the folds should be uniform in width.

Without confining myself to the precise construction and arrangement of partsherein described*- I -claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An adjustable blade C, arranged to operate in combination with an adjustable bar '12, substantially`as and for the purpose described;
