SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,731, dated August 8, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BERT NEWSOME, of Minonk, in the county of Woodford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a thread-cutter adapted to be carried on the thumb or finger of the user and embodying a pivoted blade which maybe thrown down when not in use and which when thrown upward may be conveniently and quickly employed to sever the thread.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is an end elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.

The thread-cutter is constructed of two sectionsnamely, the body and the blade. body is formed of an integral section of spring sheet metal in the form of a band 4:, adapted to encircle the thumb or finger of the user after the manner of a ring and having at one end two upwardly-projected side flanges or lugs 5 of approximately triangular form, at the points or apexes of which are the respective inwardly-projected fingers 6. The other end of the band 4 laps over the first-named end and bears between the flanges 5 and under the fingers 6, the extremity at the said second-named end being bent upward to form a lip 7. (Shown best in Fig. 2.)

The knife or blade has a blade proper, 8, preferably formed with concave cutting edges at each side, butwhich, if desired, may have any other form convenient or adapted to the work in hand. The inner end of the blade 8 The is formed with two laterally-projecting trunnions 9, mounted to rock in orifices formed in the respective flanges 5, and the blade is also provided at its inner end with a heel 10, adapted to bear against the lip 7 of the band 4 when the blade is thrown upward to the operative position, (shown in Fig. 2,) in which position the blade also bears against the fingers 6, thus holding the blade rigidly in the position explained. When the blade is thrown down to inactive position, the heel 1O presses the ends of the band 4 firmly together and the spring properties of the band hold the blade in the position referred to.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A thread-cutter, comprising a springband, one end of which is lapped over the other, the last-named end having side flanges receiving the first-named end and also having in wardly-projecting fingers and the said firstnamed end having an upturned lip, and a blade having a heel at its inner edge and having trunnions respectively mounted in the side flanges of the band, the heel coacting with the first-named end of the band.

2. A thread-cutter, having a spring-band, one end of which is lapped over the other, and a blade mounted to swing on one end of the band, the other end of the band pressing the blade, to hold the same in open or closed position.

3. A thread-cutter, having a spring-band, one end of which is lapped over the other, side flanges attached to the second-named end of the band, and a blade pivoted in the side flanges and having a heel engaged by the firstnamed end of the band.
