Description

encuen EGARD, on PIPER CITY, ILLINOIS.'-
LettersA Patent No. 110,007, dated December 13, 1870.
IMPROVEMENTl IN TOOL-CHESTS.
To all whom it may concern.- V
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. GARD, of Piper City, in the county of Fordmnd State of- Illinois,v
, have invented a new and improved Tool-Chest; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, ref-v erence being had to the accompanying draw-ing forming partof this specification.
This invention ,relates t'o improvements in ltoolchests, and consists in an'application to the cover of a chest of a seat and clamp, such as used` by leather workers, in such a way that, when thecover is raised and tbe chest opened, the whole constitutes-a seat and bench of a convenient kind for such workers, and,
when closed, the tools being in the same places as when the workman is atV work, will be packed ready for storage or transportation. v
,Figure 1 is a' longitudinal sectional elevation of my im provedchest;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, when opened; and
Figure 3 is a side elevation, when opened.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is an ordinary rectangular chest; and
B B', the-cover.
The latter is hinged at C to one end ofthe chest.
This cover has the strengthening ribs D attached to the sides, and one end is divided at E, the part B being hinged to the end cross-bar D, so that, when* opened, the said part will swing down, as represented in fig. 2, and form vthe support for the outer end of the seat, which is composed of the boards G, fastened to the inside of the part B of the cover, aud to the endv piece D, on which boards a leather or vother cushion, H, may be attached. y
Another narrow board, I, is hinged to part B, to be let down to the'oor; also, for a support for .the 'seat on that side, to take the weight oft' the hinges C.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: of the same.
vIhe support B1 is braced by a bar, B?, which,'when the cover is closed, is turned over alongside the box, and rests'in a catch, B3..
The leg I is braced by the bar I, which is jointed to I at I, and enters a slot in the edge of support B1 at I2.
K is a clamp support hinged to one of the lside strips D, so as to fold inside when the cover is closed,l
and outside when opened.
L and M are the jaws of' the clamp. They are hinged to K, as shown, and rise to the vertical position when required for use, L being supported against the shoulder N of' the support.
' These jaws fold down into line with the support K when folded into the box, and room is provided for the said support by the recess O formed in the upper edge ofthe side of the box-case'.
These clamps have a cord, P, connectingthem and the foot-lever Q, as shown for clamping the leather between them.
The foot-treadle Q is a narrow bar jointed to the support B1 at the lower end, and folds down alongside of the edge of it when the cover ot' the chest is Aclosed down. Y v It will Athus bc seen that my improved tool-box forms a convenient work-bench when opened.
' Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire t'o secure by L etters Patent- 1. A tool-chest, provided with a cover formed of the parts B Bl D I and the seat G H, combined aand arranged substantially as specified.
2. In combination with the parts 1?h Bl D I and seat G H, the clamp support K, clamp L M, cord P, and treadle, all substantially as speeed.
GEORGE F. GARD.
Witnesses:
RICHARD H. LENOX, J AMES R. GILBERT.
