Description

VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK CHASE, OF SOUTH SUTTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
WINDOW-SHUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,756, dated April 9, 1901.
Application filed October 6, 1900. Serial No. 32,230. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK CHASE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Sutton, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Window-Shutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved window-shutter arranged to permit the operator to conveniently open or close the slats from the inside of a room without being compelled to open the windowsash.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis a perspective viewof the side of a building with the improvement applied and the shutter shown in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
The two shutters illustrated in Fig. 1 are alike in construction and each consists,essentially, of amain slatted frame A, connected by suitable hinges B with a window-casing C at the outside of a building, the same as ordinary shutters now in use. The main frame A of the shutter is provided with outer and inner slats A A2, located directly opposite each other, the outer slats being spaced a distance apart from the inner slats, the individual slats of each set being spaced apart,
as is plainly shown in the drawings. By this arrangement a sufficient space is formed in the main Slat-frame A for the reception of an auxiliary Slat-frame D, arranged with slats D', adapted to register with or move out of register with the spaces between the sets of inner and outer slats. The auxiliary slatframe D is movable vertically in the main slatei'rame A and normally rests with its lower end on the lower cross-bar A3 of the main slatframe A, as is plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3,
the slats D then being in register with the spaces between the inner and outer slats A A2 of the main Slat-frame, so that the spaces in said main Slat-frame A are closed. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) On the lowercross-bar of the auxiliary Slat-frame D is secured a downwardly-extending arm E, adapted to be engaged by a lever F, a cam, or other suitable device held on the window-frame and extending to the inside of the room, so that when the operator manipulates the lever F or like device then the arm E, and with it the auxiliary frame D, is moved upward to move the slats Dl out of register with the spaces between the inner and outer slats A A2, so that the spaces in the main-frame slats are opened to allow the air and light to pass through the shutter.
The upper cross-bar A4 of the main slatframe A is preferably removably secured in position, so as to permit of conveniently removing said top cross-bar whenever it is desired to slide the auxiliary Slat-frame out of position in the main Slat-frame for the purpose of painting or repairing said auxiliary Slat-frame.
Ordinary or special devices may be used for holding the shutter in an open or closed position on the window-frame.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with the window-frame, the sash mounted therein, and the windowshutter arranged on the outside of the sash and provided with an adjustable part, of a finger-lever fulcrumed on the frame below the sash, the fulcrum of the lever being coincident with the sash to permit the rocking of the lever when the sash is closed, and a connection between the lever and the adjustable part of the window-shutter to permit operating the latter.
